SUMMARY

The Senior Policy Advisor [tax policy] for the Economic Policy Project is a subject matter expert across a range of tax policy issues, including the Child Tax Credit (CTC) and Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and tax policies with implications for housing and savings. The aim of this portfolio is to improve tax systems to be more inclusive and equitable for low to moderate income Latino families. S/he will work to increase financial security and wealth-building opportunities for Latino families. S/he have deep knowledge of federal and state level policy related to these issue areas and bring substantive expertise to UnidosUS’s work on economic policy.

The Senior Policy Advisor position will be based in Washington D.C. in anticipation of a major tax overhaul in Congress in 2025, will sit within the Policy & Advocacy component of UnidosUS and will report to the Director of the Economic Policy Project or Senior Director for Public Policy.

The Advisor will join a team of high functioning colleagues on the Economic team, across the Policy and Advocacy component and throughout the institution, including a legislative affairs staff and marketing and communications team, and will have the ability to work with our Affiliate Network. The person in this role will inherit a strong set of relationships on relevant policies with key decision makers in Congress, the White House and in the key agencies and departments within the Administration.

This position is hybrid, and is based out of Washington, D.C.

Salary: $93,508 - $108,705

Essential Functions

  • Develop advocacy campaign strategies/tactics and work plans that advance tax equity and deepen our impact on behalf of Latinos, including on tax innovations that can drive housing investments by taxpayers and on tax administration issues that hamper immigrant economic integration.
  • Lead and collaborate on drafting, editing, and publishing relevant tax and economic public policies that affect the Latino community and advance racial equity. 
  • Congressional and Administrative advocacy with federal agencies (e.g., U.S. Treasury Department), with an interest tax service provision relevant to Latinos, non-English speakers and immigrant workers, families and children.
  • Lead external coalitions and represent UnidosUS in high-visibility forums, including delivering presentations and testimony before congressional staff, policymakers, issue experts and stakeholders, national conferences, and the media.
  • Build and deepen relationships with relevant federal policymakers, in Congress, the Administration, and within core states.
  • Provide strategic recommendations, as appropriate, to UnidosUS leadership, including the President and CEO and the Board of Directors.

Qualifications & Requirements 

Education and Experience 

  • Graduate degree or equivalent experience in a relevant field (economics, law, statistics, public policy) and eight(8) to ten(10) years’ experience.
  • Fluency in statistics, quantitative analysis, and data visualization
  • Experience communicating and presenting on public policy issues in policy settings.
  • Demonstrated expertise with US Government programs focused on tax policy and its implications for economic inclusion.
  • In-depth experience in conducting and publishing policy analyses or research design and execution.
  • Demonstrated experience with and knowledge of the Latino community.
