Reporting the Chief Physician Executive, this role also has a dotted-line reporting relationship with the Chief Operating Officer of Bronson Battle Creek Hospital. The Chief Medical Officer (CMO) at Bronson Battle Creek serves as the senior physician executive at the hospital, providing strategic leadership and support to ensure the continuous improvement of patient safety, quality, effectiveness, value, and efficiency of patient care across the entire hospital. The CMO plays a vital role in medical staff services, medical education programming, and clinical governance while fostering meaningful relationships between administration, physicians, advanced practice clinicians, and all caregivers. The CMO ensures that all services and products are provided in a high-quality and cost-effective manner while promoting the system's image in the community through active participation in external organizations.. Employees providing direct patient care must demonstrate competencies specific to the population served.

Key Responsibilities:

Strategic Planning & Leadership:

  • Collaborate with the Chief Operating Officer of Bronson Battle Creek and subordinate managers to develop short- and long-term goals and plans aligned with the system's and the hospital’s objectives.
  • Collaborate with the Chief Clinical Officer of Bronson Medical Group to align the strategic priorities of Bronson Battle Creek Hospital and the Medical Group, ensuring that patients experience exceptional care throughout the care continuum.
  • Develop and administer coordinated budgets, identifying cost-saving opportunities.
  • Collaborate with the executive leadership team to develop and implement strategic initiatives and programs.
  • Serve as a liaison between the executive team and the Battle Creek Local Leadership Council (LLC) and medical staff, ensuring their active engagement in hospital operations.

Medical Staff Management:

  • Manage medical staff services at Battle Creek, including support for the Partnership Compact initiatives and physician credentialing processes.
  • Support the development and implementation of clinical quality improvement initiatives and evidence-based practices.

Physician Leadership:

  • Advance a culture of physician engagement, leadership development, and collaboration.
  • Foster relationships with physicians and advanced practice clinicians to optimize clinical outcomes.
  • Provide executive leadership for Bronson Battle Creek operations and physician-led clinical programs.
  • Oversee providers working throughout the hospital and specialty areas.

Policy Development and Administration:

  • Formulate and implement policies and procedures, ensuring efficient and effective services.
  • Provide leadership in developing hospital-wide policies related to areas of responsibility.

Regulatory Compliance:

  • Ensure compliance with relevant licensing and accrediting bodies.
  • Support efforts to meet regulatory requirements and standards.

Budget and Resource Management:

  • Participate in annual budget processes and resource optimization efforts.
  • Collaborate with the Chief Information Officer (CIO) and the IT Department to optimize clinical information systems in support of current systems and any upcoming implementations.

  • Stay updated on developments in acute healthcare administration and issues within subordinate departments.

Duties and Responsibilities Unique to this Position:

  • Direct the maintenance and analysis of the physician database to estimate market share and physician needs.
  • Coordinate the integration of physician needs into strategic planning.
  • Oversee the physician leadership curriculum and continuing education for physician staff.
  • Act as a liaison between the medical staff and the organization, promoting the mission and vision.
  • Ensure medical staff governance structure compliance with accrediting and regulatory agency requirements.
  • Assess medical staff satisfaction and promote and support the physician compact; develop tactics for improvement.
  • Promote evidence-based medical practices and monitor clinician performance.
  • Oversee medical care and outcomes quality for physicians.
  • Maintain effective communication with peers at local and regional healthcare organizations, facilitating collaboration on patient care delivery practices.

Qualifications:

Medical Doctor (MD) with board certification.

Active medical license in the state of Michigan.

Minimum of 10 years in clinical practice and 5 years in physician leadership.

Minimum of 10 years of hospital and/or acute care setting experience 

Master’s in Business Administration, Healthcare Administration, or related field preferred.

Strong knowledge of medical staff organization, credentialing, and quality improvement.

Excellent leadership and communication skills.
