Our mission is to advance psychological science by generating and sharing new knowledge through collaborative scholarship, educating and mentoring student scholars, and contributing to the public good.

Our department’s vision, to be an inclusive intellectual community that fosters discovery and innovation, is embedded within the University of Denver’s vision to be a great private university dedicated to the public good. Students and faculty in the Psychology Department actively contribute to diversity, equity, and inclusion goals through scholarship, teaching, and service. Our Clinical Psychology Ph.D. program is APA-accredited and ascribes to a clinical science model, including membership in the Academy of Psychological Clinical Science. We are a broad clinical program with a specialty emphasis in children, adolescents, and families.

The University of Denver is situated in the Denver metro area, a vibrant urban center in the Rocky Mountain region that is home to more than 3 million people. Our metropolitan location along the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains supports faculty collaboration across a number of local universities. The University is comprised of approximately 5800 undergraduates (including over 700 psychology majors), 5500 graduate students, and over 700 full-time faculty. The University recently received recognition as an R1 by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education.

Position Summary

We seek a clinical psychologist for a Clinical Assistant Professor position, non-tenure track, in the Clinical Psychology program. The Clinical Professor series at the University of Denver is a non-tenured, professional series with multi-year 10-month contracts and opportunities to be promoted to associate and full clinical professor over time. Opportunities to teach or supervise during the 2-months off-contract will likely also be available for additional compensation.

We are a clinical science Ph.D. program that highly values evidence-based practice, within a highly collaborative research-intensive Department of Psychology that offers undergraduate B.A. and B.S. degrees as well as doctoral degrees in developmental and experimental psychology. Our clinical program has a specialty emphasis in children, adolescents, and families and our Center for Child and Family Psychology primarily serves these populations. All tenure-line faculty in the Clinical Psychology Ph.D. program value high-quality clinical training and all provide clinical supervision of doctoral students. The individual in this position will be a valued member of this collaborative clinical supervision group, our clinical area, and our department, where all faculty with teaching/clinical work, research, and service responsibilities are integrated into departmental culture and decision making.

The position carries an annual teaching load of 6 in-person course equivalents. Course equivalents are anticipated to reflect a balance of supervision of clinical Ph.D. graduate students in clinical work as well as instruction of graduate and undergraduate courses. We anticipate the annual load will include approximately 3-4 supervision sections and 2-3 traditional classroom courses; however, final assignments will be assigned by the department chair annually, considering faculty preference, expertise, and departmental needs. It is typical for faculty to begin with an emphasis that more closely matches their prior experience and to develop a broader teaching portfolio across time. This position is eligible for sabbatical after every 6 years of continuous service.

Teaching equivalents may include both individual and group supervision in intervention and assessment. Supervision experience and strong familiarity with evidence-based child and family therapeutic approaches is essential. Clinical supervisors are expected to meet weekly with trainees for didactics and case-specific supervision (individual and/or group supervision), watch videos of client sessions, oversee clinical administrative tasks, and ensure compliance with ethical and legal statutes.

All youth-focused clinical psychologists are encouraged to apply. Specialization is highly desirable in evidence-based therapy approaches for externalizing behavior problems (e.g., Parent-Child Interaction Therapy/PCIT, Parent Management Training/PMT, and other behavioral parenting approaches) and/or expertise in comprehensive psychodiagnostic assessment approaches (e.g., integration of structured clinical interview, questionnaire, and cognitive & academic testing data), as it complements existing departmental strengths. Applicants who contribute to the University’s mission to serve the public good and those who have training and experience working with traditionally underserved populations are also especially encouraged to apply.

While licensed and license-eligible applicants are desired, we are able to provide supervision to applicants who are still working towards meeting Colorado’s licensing requirements. Applicants who are not yet licensed or license-eligible will be considered, and if hired, will be expected to fulfill all requirements for licensure within 1 year of starting their faculty appointment.

The position start date is Sept. 1, 2024 with 10-month appointments September through June each year. Opportunities to teach or supervise during the 2-months off-contract will likely also be available for additional compensation. All questions can be directed to Department Chair, Sarah Watamura, PhD at sarah.watamura@du.edu.
