The Opportunity: DEA is seeking a Chief Operations Officer (COO) to join its executive team and partner with our chief executive officer to achieve our vision of delivering excellence to our employees, clients, shareholders, and peers. The successful candidate will exemplify entrepreneurial spirit and demonstrate exceptional leadership in operations and strategic thinking.

The Company: Headquartered in Portland, Oregon, DEA is comprised of around 1,000 employees. DEA is a recognized leader in the design of complex transportation, land development, water, environmental, and energy projects nationwide. Position Location: Preferred location is our headquarters in Portland, OR but we are open to one of our other office locations. 

The COO’s main responsibilities include:

  • Drive operational excellence across the firm by working with the different business leaders on day-to-day operational matters.
  • Foster collaboration and teamwork across the company both amongst business units and different geographies.
  • Manage the recruitment and growth of operational talent in the firm.
  • Anticipate and mobilize the company operation to adapt to external changes in the market.
  • Engage effectively with the company board on operational matters.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Experience in an operational role for a firm or group with $250 million or more in annual revenue.
  • Background in the architectural, engineering, or construction industry. 
  • Experience working for a firm with 1000 employees in multiple locations.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Operational experience in transportation, water, land development, geomatics, or power fields.
  • Master’s in Business Administration (MBA)
  • Experience in an operations role for an engineering firm with $400 million in annual revenue.
  • Proven ability to lead collaboration and teamwork across multiple business units and geographic locations.
  • Strong change management skills and ability to anticipate change in the external environment.
  • Ability to drive operational excellence with track record of profitable operational management in the AEC industry.
  • Experience recruiting and managing operational talent including the roll out of learning and growth programs for operational staff.
  • Ability to engage effectively with the board on operational matters.
  • The COO role will require some travel within the US.
