About Horticulture4Growth H4G

Horticulture 4 Growth (H4G): an Initiative of the Agricultural Commercialization Clusters (ACCs) is a new $6M, 5-year project being joint implemented by TechnoServe and the Agricultural Transformation Institute (ATI), funded by the Bill& Melinda Gates Foundation(BMGF). H4G will accelerate the transformation of Ethiopia's horticulture sub-sec by leveraging the power of the private sector to strengthen the link between production and demand and improve the road-to-market for horticultural products through modernized domestic and export market channels. The project will primarily focus on five priority horticulture crops (banana, avocado, tomato, onion, and avocado) sourced from horticulture ACC woredas to transform the relationships of key market actors to be more inclusive and equitable. By the end of five years, a strengthened horticulture market system underpinned by a strong private sector will enable Ethiopian small-scale producer to earn higher, more stable incomes and increase the consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables in rural and urban areas.

The H4G Senior Market and System Analyst Role

As the Senior Market and System Analyst, you will be responsible for the leadership and delivery of the Business Analytics team. This team provides business advisory services to our partners and strategic data driven guidance to the overall program. You will manage and supervise a team of three as part of a total H4G team of 18. You will report directly to the H4G Program Manager, while working closely with other Program components: Business Partnership, Contract management, Gender specialist and Field Activities.

This is an exciting opportunity to work with an array of market system actors to develop, pilot, and implement new, more inclusive ways of doing business that meets market needs, generates economic benefits, and promotes behavior change to strengthen the performance of the overall horticulture market system. A key component of the program includes a Catalytic Grant Fund to promote private sector development through a combination of matching grants and technical assistance to incentivize innovation. These grants will be used to core costs related to market actors investing in or adopting new business models related to 1) last-mile input distribution 2) improved aggregation, infrastructure, and logistic services and 3) smallholder-inclusive sourcing strategies.

Key Responsibilities

Client Management & Business Advisory Services

  • Lead all relevant business analytics for clients under the H4G Catalytic Grant Fund
  • Maintain strong relationships with private sector clients through clear, effective, and regular communication, understand their needs and expectations, ensuring strong project coordination and joint problem-solving
  • Identify potential new clients through networking events or referrals.
  • Assist clients to diagnose constraints and identify business opportunities through tailored technical assistance, assisting them in setting realistic short and long term objectives.
  • Set realistic short-term and long-term objectives based on the client's vision and mission.
  • Conduct regular check-ins with existing clients to ensure satisfaction and identify opportunities for growth.
  • Provide excellent customer service by responding promptly to inquiries and addressing concerns.
  • Co- create and co-implement client-specific business cases/initiatives/strategies, conducting research and gathering data as necessary to inform decisions
  • Analyze horticulture market trends, competitors, and industry developments to inform strategic decisions.
  • Translate business case initiative/strategy into technical roadmap, including actionable steps with mutually agreed to interventions, aligned to client and program objectives
  • Synthesize conclusions and develop presentations to share with client, stakeholders, and donors
  • Work closely with the Business Partnership manager, contract management specialist, Gender specialist and Field activities coordinator team, provide ongoing support services to clients to support execution of activities; course correct as necessary
  • Create reports and visualizations to communicate findings and recommendations to stakeholders, such as executives or project managers.
  • Strategic Planning collaborate with cross-functional teams to develop strategies based on the insights derived from data analysis.
  • Overseeing projects related to data collection, processing, storage, retrieval, and dissemination.
  • Provide technical support and guidance to other staff members who use software applications and databases.
  • Develop training materials and conducting workshops to educate employees about using data effectively.
  • Ensure that all data is accurate, reliable, and consistent across different systems and platforms.
  • Identify potential risks associated with data usage and implementing measures to mitigate those risks
  • Working closely with IT professionals, data scientists, and other experts to ensure seamless integration between technology solutions and business objectives

Business Analytics Team Leadership and Management

  • Lead, manage, and supervise a cohesive and harmonious project team, convening regular team meetings, delegating responsibility as appropriate, providing performance reviews and feedback, and supporting successful knowledge transfer to staff, partners, and clients
  • Ensure timely and high- quality delivery of technical assistance, proactively reviewing assignments, supporting data-driven recommendations, and refining private sector insights
  • Collaborate with other program team members to leverage their existing relationships with market actors for the purpose of market systems research, analysis, business strategy, and project intervention design, while also advising their activities
  • Establish a culture of excellence in which the team strives for constant learning and improvement, where success is celebrated, communication is open, and everyone's contribution is valued

Monitoring, Evaluation, and porting

  • Regular meetings with the Program Manager and Senior Management Team to provide strategic feedback base on ongoing analysis and evaluation to support data-driven decision making and adaptive management at the team or organization level
  • Support PM with preparation and timely submission of high-quality program reports
  • Work closely with the M&E, Gender and Inclusion Advisor team members for the timely collection, analyses, and reporting of monitoring, evaluation, and learning data to promote evidence-based decision making and adaptive management
  • Conduct research as needed to support overall program and other teams to inform intervention areas as needed e.g. develop diagnostic surveys, manage new data collection, create program tools
  • Promote learning and advance gender equality within team and with partners; adapt project approach as needed to ensure benefit to women and youth
  • Desired qualification and experience
  • A Bachelor's or Master' degree in business, agribusiness, economics, rural development, statistics or other relevant field of study (Master's preferred)
  • At least 5-7 years of progressively responsible, relevant professional experience. Strong preference for candidates from a management consulting or private sector background.
  • High level of analytical kills with an ability to construct a basic business case and communicate the economic opportunities in the horticulture sector for both small-scale producers and private sector actors
  • Advanced Microsoft PowerPoint and Excel skills, with prior experience in financial modelling and presentation deck development for external stakeholders
  • Demonstrated analytic capabilities and experience carrying out similar projects successfully, particularly in markets system analysis and subsequent design and development of project interventions that solve business/technical challenges across the value chain e.g., input provision, quality production, sourcing and aggregation, access to finance, market information and linkages, standards and certification, sales and distribution
  • Significant experience managing multiple and complex stakeholder relationships
  • Fluency in Amharic and English, with excellent English writing and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to frequently travel to project sites, as necessary
