UW Medicine’s IT Services department has an outstanding opportunity for a Principal Data Architect

In collaboration with UW Medicine IT Services (‘ITS’) and under the general guidance of the Data Engineering Manager, the primary focuses of the Principal Data Architect, Data Engineering (‘Principal’) are:

  • Collaborate with Analytics’ Leadership in setting the direction and establishing the technical approach for scaling and integrating the Data Analytics Warehouse Galaxy (DAWG) platform and associated information applications and programs to support Harborview Medical Center, UW Medicine Montlake Campus, UW Medicine Northwest Campus, UW Physicians and multiple affiliate organizations.
  • Strategize, develop, enhance, and govern Data Engineering architectural standards.
  • Provide development, documentation, and maintenance of the data engineering infrastructure as the domain expert.
  • Manage Data Engineering technical portfolios, research trends, create 1-3-5 year technology roadmaps, and present recommendations to leadership.
  • Leverage expertise of available technologies to perform architectural reviews and cost analysis.
  • Develop and deliver trainings across the department in area of expertise.
  • Lead large scale architecture related incident resolution for Data Engineering.
  • Identify and build service management improvements for Data Engineering.
  • Provide advice, coaching and mentorship to team members on technical expertise.
  • Serve as the Data Engineering manager’s delegate to represent the team for vendor management, including strategic vendor meetings; architecture meetings; meetings with technical account managers; project design meetings; large scale incident resolution; and other technical leadership needs.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Technical Leadership in Provisioning for Data Engineering (25%)

  • Support Analytics leadership to establish approach for integrating Data Engineering applications and programs.
  • Contribute to best practices and standards around topics including but not limited to: Data Engineering Application architecture, networking/network topology, data management, tool selection, release pipelines.
  • Support business units, IT leadership, and application development teams to make strategic decisions regarding Data Engineering application architecture and design.
  • Create and maintain reference architecture diagrams and supporting documents.
  • Provide advanced level technical solutioning and decision making.

Clinical Informatics Program Management (20%)

  • Leads development of the Clinical Informatics Program. 
  • Coordinates and oversees the execution of assigned projects, including project architecture, sequencing, execution, breakpoint mitigation, and resource management.
  • Works with Project Managers to develop deliverables and timelines. Monitors progress and conducts status meetings to review progress and identify/mitigate barriers. Facilitates resolution of system issues.
  • Maintains current knowledge of legal and regulatory standards and standards of practice to assure that clinical systems support compliance with standards. 
  • Provides clinical mentorship to leaders and staff implementing clinical information systems. Manages clinical informatics conferences and site visits. Mentors and collaborates with clinical informatics students and fellows. 

Process Improvement for Data Engineering (20%)

  • Utilize continuous improvement processes.
  • Plan for, and assist in, developing business resumption procedures and practices.
  • Assist management in creating a technological vision for the organization at a strategic and tactical level.
  • Design and document standard maintenance and operational procedures. Monitor procedures for effectiveness, initiate process improvement, as necessary.
  • Participate in continuous improvement exercises as defined within the program, ITS, and/or UW Medicine.

Mentoring (15%)

  • Mentor, advise, and coach team members in technical knowledge, practices, processes, and procedures.
  • Develop and deliver trainings across the department in area of expertise.
  • Guide customers and other staff in technology standards, best practices, technical trends, and valuable resources.
  • Lead and mentor team members in complex, large-scale troubleshooting or problem-solving exercises.
  • Maintain expert technical proficiency appropriate for assigned systems and domains. Maintain competency and lead trainings in related technology fields, such as, but not limited to, operating system technologies, high availability, virtual technologies, storage, and tactics to pursue poor performance and general troubleshooting.

Project Management and Communications (15%)

  • Manage technical portfolios, including, researching trends and creating 1-3-5 year technology roadmaps.
  • Plan and present recommendations to leadership.
  • Leverage technical expertise in impactful, enterprise-level projects.
  • Manage risks, issues, communications, and necessary documentation.
  • Use technical knowledge, provide detailed, and in-depth recommendations regarding systems architecture and design.

Vendor Management for Data Engineering (10%)

  • Manage vendor/supplier relationships. Work with hardware and operating system vendors to ensure timely issue response and that targets and service quality are being achieved. Meet with vendors’ technical resources for health checks and to review open issues.

Technical Leadership in System Maintenance for Data Engineering (10%)

  • Provide a high level of expertise in assigned domains.
  • Lead large scale incident resolution and exceptional request.
  • Perform system trending analysis.
  • Provide 3rd tier/advanced technical support.
  • Build lifecycle plan for technologies, including systems upgrades.

Other (5%)

  • Communicate effectively to team members, project managers, supervisor, and other leadership as required.
  • Participate and provide support for enterprise processes, such as, change control, security certification, architectural review and production readiness assessments.
  • Participate in required program meetings and weekly planning meetings. May be asked to participate in other meetings as required.
  • Maintain a high working knowledge of current and proposed technologies used within the program and ITS.
  • Participate in all aspects of improving the team, including education/training of other team members and contributing to process/communication improvement initiatives.

REQUIREMENTS

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Business Administration, or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.

6+ years of experience includes:

  • 4+ years data architecture experience (enterprise business architecture approach and methodology, business segments, diagrams, and documentation).
  • 2+ years of experience developing and leading technical trainings for teams, and mentoring less experienced technical staff members.
  • 4+ years of experience providing advanced support for the overall health of enterprise systems and technologies.
  • 2+ years of experience being primarily responsible for an enterprise technology.
  • 1+ years of managing vendor relationships, including negotiating maintenance contracts, reviewing periodic service reviews, and coordinating escalations.
  • 1+ years of implementing and improving processes.
  • Active member in local technology user groups and/or other professional organizations related to area of expertise.
  • Demonstrated experience creating and maintaining detailed documentation, including standard operating procedures, system diagrams, and any other technical documentation; including, 1+ years of managing technical requirements of an enterprise system.
  • Technical Enterprise Architecture experience (design/architect in infrastructure environment systems/application, database/database management, business processes/workflows, etc.).
  • Advanced understanding of ITSM/ITIL Process Design, Platforms, and Configuration.
  • Advanced understanding and application of Cloud technologies (e.g. AWS, Google Cloud Platform, Azure).
  • Strong experience with formal software engineering practices (source code version control, validation/deployment/maintaining Microsoft-based applications).
  • Advanced experience with various Extract, Transfer, and Load (ETL) toolsets.
  • Advanced experience with multiple data languages.

DESIRED

  • Previous experience in and knowledge of academic healthcare systems and/or operational environments.
  • Advanced degree (e.g., Master’s, PhD, etc.).
  • Experience working in a healthcare setting, ideally academic healthcare.
  • Understanding of HIPAA regulations and/or Human Subjects regulations for clinical research.
  • Experience with developing/managing IT applications and systems in a healthcare setting.
  • Experience with Enterprise Architecture tools such as: ARIS, Casewise, Oracle BPA.
  • Experience with decisions support and/or hospital finance systems.
