Associate Landscape Designer/Planner

Position Description

Key responsibilities of this role include the following:

  • Provide expertise in landscape design and help shape the planning of urban and campus districts, open spaces, and public realm.
  • Engage in all aspects of HUPAD’s planning and project work, including physical planning, urban design, regulatory approvals, research, writing, development of graphics, data analysis, and community engagement.
  • Prepare urban design analyses, site and landscape studies, and alternative scenarios under the supervision of senior staff as appropriate, for plans/projects of all scales.
  • Create high-quality graphics, digital models, presentations, and other content that reflects design, goals, and priorities of landscape and public realm related projects and studies.
  • Support internal and external planning and project efforts, meetings, and coordination with consultants, including preparing materials, documenting decisions, and monitoring status and next steps.
  • Assist in the creation of presentations and materials that can be utilized to share public information about specific projects and planning initiatives with private citizens, civic or community groups, and other interested parties.
  • Participate in the review of a wide range of large- and small-scale projects, by analyzing project documents (plans, sections, grading plans, etc.) and understanding the project context and site constraints with a focus on landscape and the public realm.
  • Communicate design feedback in a professional and collaborative manner to external and internal stakeholders.
  • Work collaboratively in multi-disciplinary teams consisting of planners, architects, landscape architects, policymakers, and urban designers.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Basic Qualifications

Candidate must meet the following basic qualifications to be considered for this role:

  • Bachelor's degree in landscape architecture or related field required.
  • At least 5 years of relevant experience, advanced degree may count toward years of experience.

Additional Qualifications and Skills

  • Advanced degree in landscape architecture or related field preferred but not required.
  • Proficiency in graphic communication and software (AutoCAD, SketchUp, and Adobe Creative Suite).
  • Demonstrated experience with planning/design at the district scale, as well as the site scale.
  • Knowledge of sustainability and resilient landscape systems and best practices at the district scale, as well as the site scale.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong organizational and management skills, with attention to detail.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, ability to work effectively at all levels of an organization, and ability to work well in teams and independently.
  • Experience with community engagement processes and public speaking preferred.
