Situated in Stanford’s highly dynamic research environment, the Stanford PEDSnet team seeks a Research Data Scientist (Research Data Analyst 2) to develop high quality coherent research-ready biomedical datasets, and manage and analyze clinical data (i.e. electronic health records, administrative claims data, etc.) under the direction of the PEDSnet leadership team. The Research Data Scientist will partner with researchers and clinicians to enable effective and efficient use of the PEDSnet Common Data Model, PCORnet Common Data Model, and/or OMOP/OHDSI databases along with their respective cohort query tools and interfaces. This individual will be responsible for continuous evaluation of the health of these datasets and enterprise tools used by the research community and for developing new analytical methods supporting novel research. The Research Data Scientist will help researchers and clinical staff maximize their understanding, interpretation and use of these clinical and research tools for more informed and productive research, clinical trials, patient care and quality outcome projects. They will be embedded in research projects from inception to publication and will serve as the lead data scientist for Stanford within PEDSnet.

  • Work closely with investigators to develop high quality research-ready biomedical datasets.
  • Represent team on national research projects and grants through presentation of papers, participation in phone calls, working groups and other venues. Assist with grant proposals.
  • Collaborate with faculty and research staff on data collection and analysis methods.
  • Develop processes to measure and ensure quality, completeness and integrity of research data assets, including data/metadata documentation, data model specification and documentation of ontologies and terminologies to maximize utilization of data.
  • Work closely with the Research Technology team to understand the Clarity Data Model and other ancillary systems and registries that will enrich the research ready datasets. 
  • Maintain familiarity with the ETL (extract, transform, load) specifications to go from raw data to research ready datasets.
  • Execute site-level queries as part of PEDSnet or PCORnet network and participate in data working groups to discuss data model updates and changes.
  • Employ new and existing tools to interpret, analyze, and visualize relationships in data. Create databases and reports, develop algorithms and statistical models, and perform statistical analyses appropriate to research projects and reporting requirements.
  • Use system reports and analyses to identify potentially problematic data, make corrections, and determine root cause for data problems from input errors or inadequate field edits, and suggest possible solutions.
  • Develop reports, charts, graphs, and tables for use by investigators and for publication and presentation.
  • Identify best practices in the community and help to shape and implement policies that enhance data quality, compliance, and customer support.
  • Identify and deploy methods to notate data quality for enhanced research reproducibility.
  • Provides training to team members and users as appropriate.
  • Other duties may also be assigned.

Ideal person for this position is an individual with a sense of curiosity, deep knowledge of clinical data, quality analysis and validation methodologies; and strong interpersonal skills needed to work collaboratively with technical and non-technical stakeholders within and outside the Stanford research community, including faculty, researchers, clinicians, hospital administrators, engineering teams, IT staff and research coordinators. This is a highly collaborative position that will intersect with several Stanford Medicine teams including but not limited to: Research IT, Research Informatics Center, Quantitative Sciences Unit.

This role is open to candidates anywhere in the United States; however, applicants must be authorized to work for any employer in the U.S. We are unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment VISA at this time. Stanford University has five Regional Pay Structures. The compensation for this position will be based on the location of the successful candidate. The expected pay range for this position is $85,000 to $126,000 per annum.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • MS or PhD in Bioinformatics, Data Science, Biostatistics, Epidemiology, or a related field. 
  • 2+ years of experience performing database management and data analysis in research analyses and visualization work in a healthcare research or clinical setting, or other related experience.
  • Fluency with data science and data analyst programming languages such as SQL, Python and R.
  • Experience with common data models like OMOP or PEDSNet or PCORNet.
  • Experience with ontologies, terminologies, UMLS, or Semantic Web.
  • Ability to mine and analyze complex structured and unstructured data sets.
  • Experience working in academic and/or research environments.
  • Familiarity with regulatory requirements such as Institutional Review Board (IRB), and HIPAA. Knowledge of regulatory and data privacy issues. 
  • Familiarity with one or more data types such as Electronic Health Records (EHR), radiology, omics, device data, wearable data, pathology etc.
  • Self-motivated with a demonstrated ability to work independently, and to exercise independent judgment in developing solutions to complex problems.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills to interact with technical and non-technical stakeholders.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED):

Bachelor's degree and three years of relevant experience or combination of education and relevant experience. Experience in a quantitative discipline such as economics, finance, statistics or engineering.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED):

  • Substantial experience with MS Office and analytical programs.
  • Excellent writing and analytical skills.
  • Ability to prioritize workload.
