The Opportunity

This position is coordinates, plans, performs, and evaluates accounting and financial reporting functions of the University and operational activities of the Controller’s Office including the supervision of professional staff. The position provides official external financial reporting and internal financial reports to senior leadership used for strategic planning and goal setting. Oversees accounting process and control function of the University's financial classification and structure and perform administrative duties, including hiring, disciplining, supervising, and performance appraisals of financial specialist. Serves as subject matter expert and intermediary for Tennessee State Audit processes, matters, and concerns.

Primary responsibilities will include:

  • Assist in providing official external financial reporting and internal financial reports to senior leadership used for strategic planning and goal setting.
  • Assist the fiscal year-end close of the University’s accounting system
  • Serve as the Investment accounting expert for the department
  • Serve as State Audit Expert
  • Prepare, review or approve journal vouchers and assist departments with IRIS entry problems.

Qualifications

Education/Experience

The successful candidate will hold a bachelor’s degree in accounting or equivalent and a minimum of six years experience in responsible management within an accounting or finance filed

The successful candidate will have:

  • Extensive knowledge of Investment accounting.
  • Excellent analytical skills to reconcile financial data.
  • Demonstrated mastery in ability to produce accurate financial reports.
  • In-depth knowledge of University policies and procedures. 
  • Thorough knowledge and ability to apply Governmental Accounting Standards and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles. 
  • Ability to identify, evaluate, support, and solve complex issues.
  • Extensive problem analysis, design, system development, and documentation skills. 
  • Proven effective written and oral communication skills. 
  • Ability to build relationships and work with senior leadership and all other levels of University employees. 
  • Ability to use SAP, Adobe, and Microsoft products.

The preferred candidate will hold a Master’s degree in accounting or equivalent and minimum of six years experience in responsible management within a College or University accounting or finance setting

The preferred candidate will:

  • Certified Public Accountant license. 
  • In-depth knowledge of University’s configuration and implementation of the SAP IRIS financial system.
  • High level of institutional knowledge and understanding of the effect of changes to IRIS projects systems, accounts receivable, and sales and distribution modules on all areas of the University. 
  • Ability to use desktop data extraction reporting products such as Monarch.
