Climate Resilience Specialist, Climate Impacts Group

The Climate Resilience Specialist (UW Job title: Research Scientist 3) will work with the CIG’s lead scientists to synthesize literature, engage with partners, and apply research on climate impacts and adaptation, with a focus on resilience planning, prioritization, and effectiveness. The CIG collaborates with local, state, tribal and regional partners on the challenges that they face in adapting to a changing climate. For over two decades, CIG has worked with these partners to research, assess, and plan for climate risks. In the last few years, there has been a surge in climate resilience efforts across the region with many organizations emphasizing more effective planning and implementation. The position will join CIG at a great time with the chance to be at the forefront of this acceleration in climate resilience efforts. For Washington State, this includes the passage of several climate resilience bills by the legislature. The position will have the opportunity to advance the science of climate resilience and adaptation, while also being involved with practical applications in collaboration with state agencies and other partners.

The Research Scientist 3 will work at the boundary of scientific research and application to deliver to our partners the latest research on climate science, resilience planning, and effective implementation. The position will provide analytical, logistical, and management support for projects that require expertise in climate impacts, resilience, and planning in a variety of sectors. They will engage with local, state, and federal governments and organizations that are at all stages in the adaptation process from impacts research and vulnerability assessment to resilience planning and implementation. They will apply climate science and planning principles to support partners to advance climate resilience through effective assessment, planning, and implementation.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Support Climate Resilience Planning and Implementation in Washington and the Northwest

  • Support local, state, federal and tribal governments and organizations to effectively plan and implement climate resilience activities.
  • Collaborate with local, state, federal and tribal governments and organizations to advance the theory and practice of climate resilience planning, prioritization, implementation, and evaluation of effectiveness.
  • Synthesize literature on leading practices for climate resilience planning and evaluation.
  • Consult with practitioners and conduct science needs assessment by translating the climate information needs of resource managers, planners, and policy-makers into research questions and projects.
  • Develop science communication products (e.g., accessible reports, web content, annotated bibliographies, briefing papers, and fact sheets) for diverse audiences including state agencies and local governments.

Project Management, Engagement, and Communications

  • Provide logistical and organizational support for workshops, meetings, and other external engagement activities.

o Provide project management support for projects focused on climate resilience planning and implementation.

  • Represent CIG and conduct outreach on climate impacts and adaptation science for diverse audiences, including the production and delivery of presentations on climate impacts and adaptation practices relevant in the Northwest.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Bachelor's degree in applied social, natural or physical sciences, planning or a related field with a minimum of 4 years of experience.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Experience with planning and use of science in planning and policy.
  • Experience communicating science findings and assessment to diverse non-academic audiences, including governments and policy makers.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, including synthesizing scientific literature and other sources of knowledge orally and in writing.
  • Experience with co-production, use-inspired research, and scientific needs assessment.
  • Familiarity with climate science and climate change impacts.
  • Experience convening and organizing meetings and workshops.

DESIRED:

  • Knowledge of or experience with climate resilience planning and implementation.
  • Experience working in or closely with science-management boundary organizations.
  • Experience with evaluating program and/or project effectiveness.
