The security organization at Uber is dedicated to enabling safe and secure innovation while protecting the communities we serve both online and in the physical world. Our teams are responsible for protecting both people and their data across intersections of the digital and physical world. The primary objective for the Uber Engineering Security team is to enable the technical ambitions of the company while maintaining the highest standards of security for our customers and partners.

We are seeking a dedicated and senior technical program manager to join our strong Security TPM team with ownership of key Infrastructure Security, Secure Development, Data Protection and Privacy efforts. You will work closely with the CISO organization, Infrastructure and Data Platform teams. You will own the problem space, work closely with engineering/product leads to conceptualize solutions, organize/align multiple engineering teams for delivery and drive execution leveraging milestones/KPIs. You will look for ways to standardize, ensure execution is efficient and consistent, and set accountability by tracking progress, resolving dependencies, identifying issues, evaluating risks and communicating status to upper management and project stakeholders.

What you’ll do:

TPMs move fluidly from the big picture to details so that the team can deliver complex and strategic cross-functional projects, often with tight deadlines. You are a bridge and a connector for the company. You are intuitive, focused, driven, organized, insightful and productive. You break through communication issues and effectively develop relationships with stakeholders at all levels of the organization. You build trust across the organization. You are not afraid to be direct, but you strive to act with empathy and integrity. TPM work involves the following:

  • Manage complex and large scale cross-team, multi-functional initiatives . Collaborate with engineering managers and engineers to estimate work efforts, define achievements and manage resources. Track progress, resolve dependencies, evaluate risks and communicate status to upper management and project stakeholders. Engage and energize the project teams to achieve aggressive goals.
  • Proactively remove obstacles to drive momentum and progress. Identify communication gaps, manage issue escalations and provide support to teams balancing competing priorities. Drive results proactively.
  • Understand technical implementation at the architecture level and propose technical alternatives when necessary. Ask questions that clarify priorities and push the team to be highly effective. Develop broad domain and technical knowledge.
  • Help manage the cross-functional strategic planning and business planning process, leading conversations with key stakeholders to develop concepts for strategic initiatives, and developing those into detailed program / project plans (including roadmaps, funding planning, resource planning and hiring goals).
  • Continuously improve and scale the organization. Implement continuous improvements to the engineering organization and the program management process. Share program/project process frameworks, tools, and best practices that can be adopted throughout the organization. Improve product development and delivery. Mentor project management skills within our engineering leadership team.

What You'll need

  • At least 5+ years Technical Program Management experience in the security domain
  • Domain expertise in one or more security domains spanning infrastructure security, secure development, various data categorization and protection techniques.
  • Technical degree with years of software development experience and exposure to large scale infrastructure in a distributed systems environment
  • Solid technical aptitude and an ability to understand technical designs, challenges, and risks. Engineers enjoy working closely with you.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and exceptional emotional intelligence.
  • Proven strong cross-team and cross-org stakeholder management.
  • Analytical and truth seeking. Ability to understand complex concepts and make reasoned decisions objectively.
  • Metrics driven: Experience determining effective program KPIs and using them to measure program success and issues.
  • Strong organizational skills to juggle many tasks without losing sight of the highest priority items.
  • Excellent in identifying process gaps, measuring progress, and balancing engineering and product efficiency with process overhead.

Bonus points:

  • Experience with large scale migrations and software deployments in a rapidly changing, multi-language microservices environment
  • Experience developing/supporting automated approaches to operate and test controls in a microservice/DevOps environment
  • Background in software engineering, infrastructure / cloud engineering, and/or as an engineering manager.
