Job Purpose

The Air Quality Technician Role is central to the function of WSPs Air Quality team. WSP conduct air quality monitoring and odour studies across the UK, assessing both ambient (outdoor) and indoor air quality. Monitoring studies form the basis for nearly all assessments, including providing data for Environmental Impact Assessments, stand-alone technical reports or confirming compliance to a regulatory obligation. So the Air Quality Technician forms a critical role within the team. The teams Air Quality Technician will be undertaking these studies, routinely travelling across the UK, with the potential for occasional visits to sites in both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.

The role involves the production of technical factual reports detailing methodologies, site observations and most importantly monitoring results as well as offering advice and guidance.

  • Candidates must be suitably qualified in a relevant technical discipline (minimum HND).
  • Good Numerical skills.
  • Self-motivation, and an ability to work with minimum supervision as well as part of a team are essential attributes.
  • The successful applicants will also need to be practically minded, and demonstrate good interpersonal skills, which are essential to the role.
  • Good communication skills, must be thoroughly fluent in English both writing and spoken,
  • A full current UK driving license is essential for this role.

Working within the Air Quality team, the primary function and duties would include the following:

  • Carry out air quality monitoring duties, using a variety of techniques, including diffusion tubes, deposition gauges, sorption tubes, continuous particulate samplers and gas monitors.
  • Odour Assessments and sniff tests.
  • Communicate with analytical laboratories regarding suitable analysis, limitations and constraints as well as appropriate sampling method and chain of custody requirements.
  • Undertake landfill gas field measurements at a variety of sites across the UK.
  • Record and report site observations.
  • Liaise with Contractors and Clients on site.
  • Produce factual technical reports.

YOUR TEAM

You would be joining a team of 37 air quality professionals working on a wide range of projects including, but not limited to, major projects of national significance (e.g. HS2), international projects (including work within the water and mining sectors), land developments, transport infrastructure, energy (carbon capture/nuclear), indoor air quality and air quality policy including assessment of strategic growth.

The majority of the Air Quality Team project work comprises of air quality assessment, supported by both monitoring with dispersion modelling forming a key component of many road, power, industrial and odour projects. The Team prides itself in innovation and early adoption of monitoring technologies, as well as close collaboration with University research departments.

On the job training would be provided, alongside access to our well-established air quality training programme. Whilst sitting within a regional team, there will be extensive opportunities available to work with the wider UK air quality team across a wide range of air quality projects.
