The E&S Service Line is a vibrant and growing team covering Planning, Monitoring, & Management (including marine, atmospherics, terrestrial, and aquatic sciences); Society, Governance, & Engagement; and Regulatory Approvals, Permits & Compliance. We have a challenging opportunity for a full-time Senior Socioeconomic Specialist to join our dynamic team working out of one of our offices in Eastern Canada (Bowmanville, Kincardine, Markham, Sarnia, Sudbury, Pickering, and St. John’s NFL). We are committed to finding the ideal candidate and are willing to consider remote locations within Canada that can work in pacific or mountain standard time zones. Our ideal candidate will have a strong technical background in socioeconomics obtained through previous consulting experience or an academic setting, experience working with Indigenous communities, and familiar with federal/provincial/municipal environmental assessments, permits, licenses and approvals for large projects. 

Responsibilities and Key Accountabilities:

The Senior Socioeconomic Specialist reports to the Society, Governance, and Engagement Practice Lead within the US & Americas Environment and Society Service Line. Responsibilities will include but are not limited to the following: 

  • Conducting baseline socioeconomic studies, including desktop research, surveys, interviews, analyzing and interpretation of socio-economic data
  • Preparing the assessment of project impacts on the socio-economic environment, including consideration of regional and local economies, community services and infrastructure, land use and recreation, and community well-being and safety.
  • Preparation of work plans, project deliverables, and budgeting to support proposal preparation and other business development activities
  • Collaborating with technical and professional staff across the company in completing assignments.
  • Manages the coordination, organization, and delivery of socio-cultural research programs and related community engagement
  • Participates in the development of socio-economic mitigation and enhancement measures and management and monitoring plans
  • Quality assurance – responsible for working within the provisions and guidelines of the Quality Assurance system relevant to the Environment & Society Practice 
  • Responsible for personal safety and the safe working practices to keep project teams safe and understand and follow Worley occupational health and safety procedures. 
  • Travel as required for various field programs and meetings.
  • Remaining up to date on regulatory changes and advising project staff and clients regarding these changes as the relate to socio-economic requirements.

Preference will be given to candidates residing in the geographical locations in Eastern Canadian Provinces: The provinces include Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland.

Experience and Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor or master’s degree in Science, Social Sciences, Environmental Sciences, Indigenous Studies, or equivalent from an accredited University, and/or relevant work experience.
  • Minimum 10 years’ experience with socio-economic assessments obtained through consulting, non-governmental organizations, or academic settings.

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Proven and progressive experience in business development and/or service delivery in project environments
  • Knowledge of Canadian Indigenous groups, their locations, economic conditions, and other social and cultural factors
  • Strong research and analytical skills
  • Familiarity with federal and provincial regulatory processes that drive actions to minimize negative socio-economic impacts on communities
  • Strong project/task management and organizational skills
  • Ability to build productive relationships with professional colleagues, clients, regulators, and Indigenous communities and leadership
  • Solid understanding of Microsoft office programs including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. 
  • Collaborating with technical and professional staff across the company in completing assignments.
  • Supporting business development efforts, including potential client/prospect identification, proposal writing and client-facing activities.
  • Participating in industry events through presentations, papers at conferences or through membership in industry organizations.
  • Keeping up to date on regulatory changes and advising project staff and clients regarding these changes.
