The Bridge Regional Technical Manager will contribute to technical excellence supporting the Regional Practice Leader and working directly with department managers and engineering staff from project pursuit efforts, project development phases through final delivery to create distinctive, innovative designs. Areas of focus beyond managing and leading key projects include providing technical expertise, leadership, and guidance of our most technically complex bridge projects, providing technical leadership in business development activities, and mentoring younger engineers. The Regional Technical Manager exhibits advanced technical skills in one or more areas of bridge engineering, and will build and maintain a professional profile and reputation within the industry. The position will require technical and communication skills that can be exercised across the Region and the ability to interface with staff using your subject matter expertise to foster technical advancement within the regional bridge team. The Bridge Regional Technical Manager will work closely with, and report to, the Regional Bridge Practice Leader to prioritize individual responsibilities within this framework and promote collaborative excellence in all of Michael Baker’s bridge services. 

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Serve as Technical Manager, Lead and Advisor for local and/or regional projects.
  • Provides technical leadership on complex and/or strategic projects across the region, including development of engineering methodology, design criteria and value engineering.
  • Assists with preparation of scope of work and fee proposals on complex projects. 
  • Assists Department Managers, Office Executives, and Regional Practice Leads as applicable on major pursuits, lending technical credibility/expertise to the pursuit team. 
  • Perform structural analysis and prepare design deliverables with responsibility for successful contracting and project execution. Oversee development of structural details and construction plans using a variety of industry standard software packages. 
  • Collaborates with department managers and project managers on technical resources for project staffing assignments and execution in complex technical areas. 
  • Serves as a key project resource interfacing with the clients, assists project managers with providing a high-quality products that meets the schedule and maintains client satisfaction. 
  • Monitor QA/QC procedures and client requirements for Quality in coordination with the appropriate members of the quality assurance team 
  • Help develop technical execution and quality work standards, tools and Best Practices across the company and facilitate implementation. 
  • Build and maintain effective and enduring relationships across Michael Baker offices, regions, and external organizations to advance technical excellence and quality within and across regions. 
  • Provides technical leadership in a specialty subject matter area. Serves in a position of leadership for technical working groups. 
  • Provides leadership and direction by coaching, mentoring, and motivating staff on issues such as development of technical skills, scope and budget management, and quality assurance. Identifies and support talent within area of subject matter expertise. 
  • Stays knowledgeable of industry trends and current codes and specifications developments within their specific technical areas. 
  • Maintains awareness of technical developments and develops a professional profile and reputation through presentations to relevant conferences/meetings. 
  • Actively participates in internal and external professional development activities such as technical committees for trade organizations and industry standards development efforts.

PROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering is required. Master's degree in Structural Engineering desired.
  • Minimum 15+ years of bridge related design including 5+ years of technical management experience is required. Ideal candidates will have extensive experience with NYSDOT, NYCDOT, NYCDDC, PANYNJ and/or NYSTA; experience managing moderate to complex bridge rehabilitation/ replacement projects involving multiple disciplines such as roadway, drainage, geotechnical etc.; and experience supervising the execution, financial performance, and quality assurance of multiple simultaneous projects.
  • Must possess a valid New York Professional Engineering License
  • Prior experience as Project Manager on New York State DOT Bridge Design Projects is required, design build projects desired.
  • Be able to qualify to be a PM and manage projects for clients within the market/Office in which they reside.
  • Be able to qualify as a Lead Structural Engineer on a Design Build Project.
  • Have the skills to perform QC Oversight responsibilities. This includes an understanding of the technical design and constructability requirements and risk management skills needed to provide those quality reviews.
  • Solid communication and relationship building skills, both internally and externally.
  • Ablity to leverage on existing connections and client relationships to help identify and/or win new bridge work.
  • Ability to effectively network and influence at peer levels.
  • Knowledge and experience in Oracle-based (or similar) resource and financial management platforms.
  • Strong background in ownership, initiative and dedication to high quality engineering services and client deliverables.

COMPENSATION

The approximate compensation range for this position is $175,000 to $220,000. This compensation range is a good faith estimate for the position at the time of posting. Actual compensation is dependent upon factors such as education, qualifications, experience, skillset, and physical work location.
