Position Summary:

University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics department of Health Care Information Systems is seeking a Senior Communications Infrastructure to provide design, analysis, performance, and maintenance of communication systems infrastructure, including but not limited to pathways and spaces, telecommunication rooms, equipment rooms, data centers, media (cabling) selection and communications equipment (hardware and software) to support voice, data, wireless, video, paging, CATV, nurse call, and other communication services and systems at the University Hospital and clinics.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Maintains quality and quantity standards, procedures and guidelines for the design, development, testing, implementation, and maintenance of information transport systems.
  • Assists with creation of installation and implementation policies and procedures.
  • Assists with the development of UIHC specific communication contractor qualifications.
  • Recommends measures to improve service, equipment performance, scheduling, quality control, efficiency, and safety.
  • Works with Capital Management, end users, architects, engineers and various vendors regarding application, design and installation of infrastructure and various other communication services, including ensuring adequate communication pathways, closets, and endpoints.
  • Determines appropriate architecture, topology and transmission requirements for voice, and data cabling systems based on established departmental and industry guidelines and standards.
  • Researches, evaluates, and recommends new products or techniques related to communications infrastructure.
  • Keeps abreast of trends and technical developments in the field.
  • Provides recommendations regarding product solutions.
  • Assures compliance with industry, regulatory, department and institution installation standards.
  • Follows policies and procedures in accordance with the guidelines of The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics (UIHC) and HealthCare Information Systems (HCIS)/Communication Technology Services.
  • Follow established designs for capital projects. Must interpret, comprehend, and implement design documents as provided.
  • Provides hands-on technical installation assistance and oversight as needed.
  • Implements preventive maintenance programs of information transport systems.
  • Documents cable plant in NetDoc and Compco.
  • Manages and stores cabling test results for compliance.
  • Manages and updates monthly TR maintenance records.
  • Maintains the Division 27 specifications for capital projects.
  • Maintains knowledge of how individual instruments and tools work.
  • Provides quality control during capital construction project and report discrepancies.
  • Provides construction documents as needed for project teams.
  • Develops project budgets as they pertain to cabling systems.
  • Implements troubleshooting procedures to maintain service delivery levels.
  • Works with and establishes relationships with vendors regarding purchases of supplies, tools, and services.
  • Participates in construction design meetings, representing Infrastructure and cabling system requirements.
  • Assists in the coordination of training and technical sessions for HCIS, CTS and contracted staff. Ensures on-site installation crew is skilled and trained in UIHC installation techniques and methods.
  • Performs other duties as assigned in support of overall HCIS/Communication Technology Services activities.
  • Ability to move and install equipment up to 50 pounds and with assistance occasionally move and install equipment up to 100 pounds.

Education Required:

Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and related experience

Required Qualifications:

  • Experience (typically 4-7 years) with design, installation, and support of communication infrastructures. 
  • Knowledge of applicable network cabling industry standards
  • Experience troubleshooting cable plant problems (supporting voice, data, DAS, and A/V) using appropriate equipment.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbally and in writing, with technical and non-technical staff
  • Experience working both independently and in a team environment.
  • Experience providing technical leadership and mentoring to other technical staff.
  • A valid driver’s license and ability to meet UI Fleet Safety requirements.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • BICSI certification
  • Experience in a healthcare or health industry environment
  • Knowledge of and experience interpreting and implementing EIA and TIA infrastructure standards and guidelines
  • Knowledge of commercial building, fire, and electric codes.
  • Experience with Visio
  • Experience with terminations and splicing fiber and/or copper
