Purpose of Role

Under Armour’s Innovation Team is looking for an energetic, motivated Senior Designer, Footwear Innovation, with exceptional problem-solving skills and the ability to design both soft goods and hard goods. You will join a diverse and dynamic group of artists and engineers who introduce and drive new technology and innovation to all Business Units within Under Armour. As the Designer, you will primarily focus on footwear, however you will have opportunities to influence apparel and accessories as well. We expect you to touch all parts of the brand, and to have access to the latest technologies and sports science. Your Impact

  • Work on product as part of a highly functional, collaborative team, not in a silo; be involved from concept through transition to Inline.
  • Continuously learn and share about high performance athletic pursuits and the human body’s need from a product point of view in those endeavors. 
  • Be curious, always. Ask yourself how you can make Under Armour the best performance athletic product company on the planet.
  • Talk to athletes from the amateur to the world’s best. Dig for insights that set UA product apart from our competition. Find out what athletes want or need by building close relationships over time.
  • Provide product conceptualization in 2D and 3D form, analog and digitally. Create illustration and technical detail drawings of product, graphics and materials. Drive toward clarity with technical specifications and holistic functional design solutions.
  • Own a variety of footwear related projects including but not limited to: method of make, new material or manufacturing methods, digital processes development and application, color and materials application, textures, graphics and of course holistic new footwear concepts as well as story and presentations. Come to the team with a sharp eye for design and expression.
  • Liaise with Inline design, development and marketing to express concepts and build ownership.
  • Travel to suppliers and factories to implement ground-breaking product and build an idea network.
  • Build and modify product to express concepts and try new ideas. Sample your ideas in our Concept Creation Center.
  • Partner with Innovation Development and Material Science to give shape to new materials and ways of making.
  • Partner with our Sports Science Lab and testing partners to gain insight into problems and potential solutions
  • Be accountable, work with transparency and have a sense of urgency. Innovation moves quickly.

Qualifications

  • Solid understanding of footwear design, construction and materials. 
  • Should be versed in manufacturing techniques and have experience working at the factories on innovation and product development issues.
  • A passion for athletic performance and for solving the problems of athletes!
  • Show examples of finding and solving problems using consumer insight and design thinking.
  • Desire and ability to take risks, and to take responsibility for results – a finisher.
  • Expert ability to express concepts and ideas through hand sketching.
  • Understanding of patterns, blueprints, molds and materials.
  • Must be creative, detail oriented, able to prioritize tasks and work under pressure to successfully meet multiple deadlines.
  • Expert proficiency in Illustrator and Photoshop, Presentation software, 
  • Other computer skills: 3D modeling tools, nurbs or sub-d modeling, Microsoft Office.
  • Experience, working with factories in Asia and willingness to travel for development trips.
  • Ability to effectively present information and stories and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, media and the general public.
  • Sewing and/or model making abilities are a big plus.
  • Development experience is also a plus.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Design.
  • At least 8 years of footwear or athletic equipment industry experience or equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Experience in the athletic footwear industry required.

Workplace Location

  • Location: This individual must reside within commuting distance from our Portland, Oregon office.
  • Return to Work Designation: Three (3) days week in-office, the remainder of work week remote. 
  • Travel: International and Domestic travel

Base Compensation

$120,023.00 - $165,031.90 USD

Most new hires fall within this range and have the opportunity to earn more over time. Initial placement within the salary range, however, is based on an individual's relevant knowledge, skills and experience for the position. UA is committed to helping our teammates succeed and advance in their careers. Base salary is only one component of our competitive Total Rewards package.
