District of Columbia International School (DCI) is a public charter school serving over 1600 racially and economically diverse students in grades 6-12 from across the District of Columbia. We aim to provide our students with a world-class education that empowers them to follow their passions and change the world. DCI’s education centers on an International Baccalaureate curriculum, advanced language learning in Chinese, Spanish, and French, and a culture focused on student agency supported by 1:1 technology.

Position Overview: The Family Engagement Coordinator partners with and strengthens communication channels between students, their families, and members of the DCI community to ensure equitable and quality service to all stakeholders.

Salary Range: $50,000 - $60,000 (Starting salary is determined by education and years of relevant experience) 

Qualifications: 

  • Bilingual Spanish and English required.
  • Applicants will have a high school diploma or equivalent. College degree is preferred. 
  • At least 3 years of experience with family engagement
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school officials, parents, students, teachers, support staff and associates 
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills; proven ability to communicate in culturally and linguistically competent ways with diverse students/families
  • Experience planning and facilitating meetings for families (info sessions, parent training, focus groups, etc) 
  • Experience working in an urban school district with diverse families
  • Strong interest in, or experience with, language immersion, 1:1 technology, and IB Programme models
  • Commitment to keeping current on best practices in technology and general education
  • Commitment to ensuring access and achievement for our learners with exceptional learning needs
  • Ability to lift and carry orders and deliveries short distances
  • Ability to attend outreach and engagement events after hours and on weekends when needed

Essential Attributes:

  • Serve as liaison and translator/interpreter to the school’s family groups (PTO, Cafe y Charla, town halls, etc)
  • Provide effective and frequent multilingual communication using a variety of mediums for students and their families, including email, text, phone, and home visits.
  • Facilitate and manage parent engagement committees including all stakeholder groups (families, teachers, leaders, students, etc.)
  • Develop, implement and train staff on language access protocols and procedures to support all families
  • Actively recruit parents to attend school events, including student-led conferences and academic and arts-related school events as well as events targeted specifically at parents and families, including family classes
  • Lead the school’s monthly Cafe y Charla meetings and build and implement a program to engage DCI’s Spanish-speaking families
  • Coordinate efforts among all family groups connected to the school (i.e., the PTO) to develop a comprehensive family engagement plan and calendar each year
  • Maintain a consistent presence at school events attended by families, including orientation, parent-teacher conferences, arts nights, etc.
  • Host new parent orientations/trainings prior to the start of each school year
  • Communicate regularly with families about opportunities and resources in the community
  • Collect and analyze family engagement and language access data to measure progress and inform planning and improvements
  • Provide content for and send monthly e-newsletters and social media posts, collecting information from the school community for distribution to families
  • Represent DCI in the community and coordinate DCI’s involvement in community events
  • Participate in school fundraising activities, particularly those events involving parents and families
  • Establish channels for feedback and communication, allowing families to share their perspectives, concerns, and suggestions with the school
  • Uphold and reinforce the school's brand identity, ensuring consistent representation across all communication materials and platforms
  • Promote DCI to prospective students through print media, social media, email, school fairs, buddy days, and tours
  • Embrace French, Spanish, and Chinese cultures by participating in and leading activities for faculty and students
  • Other duties as assigned
