How You Will Contribute:

As an Electro-optics Hardware Designer, you will be responsible for designing and delivering high-speed electro-optics components for the receiver optical-to-electrical (Rx OE) modem subsystem in Ciena’s coherent Wavelogic products. In this role, you’ll collaborate with an interdisciplinary modem integration team to drive a wide range of innovative electro-optic technologies in a world-class R&D lab environment.

The successful candidate will

  • Own and document requirements for Wavelogic modem analog coherent receiver hardware elements, including silicon photonic electro-optic functions, BiCMOS/CMOS amplifiers, and the physical realization of the receiver chain including digital control and transitions between the elements.
  • Own the concatenated Rx OE modem subsystem RF response and coordinate/allocate subcomponent RF requirements.
  • Collaborate with internal and external electro-optic component suppliers to define component specifications and the required performance characterization/verification against the specifications.
  • Work within an interdisciplinary modem integration team consisting of systems, test, ADC, DSP, PCB, firmware, production, and product engineers.
  • Work with factory component and modem test engineers to optimize existing test methods and design new methods.
  • Interpret wafer, device, and modem factory test data to identify problems and help devise solutions.
  • Provide mentorship for testing prototypes in the lab to validate designs.

What Does Ciena Expect of You?

  • Customer First Mentality – what’s important to the customer is also important to you.
  • Initiative – You’re a self-starter who works with limited direction and is committed to delivering against aggressive deadlines.
  • Creative thinking – you’re keen to understand technology and see opportunities to compartmentalize higher level requirements into design tasks.
  • Agility – you are readily able to manage competing and ever-changing account priorities and maintain a balanced and methodical approach to problem solving.
  • Communication expertise –You can tailor your message and ideas to the audience to ensure understanding and clearly articulate designs, specifications, test results and trade-offs.
  • Leadership – the ability to influence, empower and get things done by people who don’t necessarily report to you.
  • The flexibility to work independently and as part of a broader team – you thrive in a team environment, but are comfortable working independently as required.
  • A commitment to learning – you keep abreast of market, competitor and technology developments and use that information to Ciena’s advantage.

The Must Haves:

  • An advanced degree (MSc or PhD) in the field of Engineering or Physics with exposure to high-speed electro-optics or equivalent experience.
  • Strong hands-on experience in design, integration, and test of high-speed electro-optic components.
  • Experience with RF test methods and equipment.
  • Exposure to ADS and/or HFSS RF design tools.
  • Ability to navigate PCB schematic and layout tools.
  • Some experience with digital control systems.
  • Strong analytical, debugging, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication in English.
  • Assertiveness to drive design and test engineers.
  • Initiative, enthusiasm, and a good sense of humour.

Assets:

  • Silicon photonics component design knowledge or experience.
  • Knowledge of photodetector physics.
  • User working knowledge of CMOS/BiCMOS/Silicon Photonic fab processes.
  • Knowledge of optoelectronic packaging technologies.
  • Transimpedance amplifier design experience.
  • Knowledge of fiber optic communications and/or DSP theory.
