Overview

The Senior Director, Space Optimization and Merch Transformation provides leadership, strategic direction, and structure to the Space Planning & Analytics (SPA) and Merchandising Transformation Teams. She/he oversees capability implementation (processes, systems, and analytics) to provide Merchandising Cross Functional Teams (CFTs) with incremental opportunities to drive the business in alignment with company vision and priorities. The Senior Director provides structure in building a strong Space Planning area of excellence, supporting Merchandising teams with tools and structure to optimize the business, and developing CFTs focused on the consumer. This role should be seen as a thought partner across merchandising and cross functional team leaders in order to create meaningful and lasting change across the organization.

Overview of Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership and structure in developing consumer-focused solutions that advance all pillars of merchandising including space & assortment, promotion, category insights, in-store merchandising, etc.
  • Develop and lead the Space Planning & Analytics team to own their area of excellence by utilizing and sharing space insights, creating consumer-centered store presentations, and sharing recommendations to drive the business as active cross-functional-team members
  • Lead team in providing CFTs with capabilities (systems/tools, processes, and training), which enhance Merchant Leader Strategies, company priorities, and team member effectiveness
  • Provide recommendations, improve and maintain clearly defined processes and procedures for positive results, and identify incremental opportunities to drive the business
  • Champion new merchandising tests, initiatives, and proof of concept strategies
  • Partner with Merchandising and Operations teams in developing Micro and Macro placement strategies to optimize space productivity and work across store locations and accommodate unique sizes and layouts of stores
  • Create and oversee assortment planning, optimization strategies, store schematics, visual merchandising, and Space Planning as part of the Assortment Planning Process
  • Provide leadership to Merchandising organization while overseeing the assortment planning process, schematics analysis and execution, and reset initiatives within stores; providing an objective lens on the business
  • Collaborate with Cross-Functional-Team leaders in optimizing each team’s impact on the business, identifying capability gaps, drive analytical and strategic support, and opportunities for efficient and effective teams
  • Lead team in unlocking of insights through data and analytics that can be applied throughout the Assortment Planning Process to drive category strategy and build and implement a consistent process to keep a pulse on competitive threats and analyze
  • Lead team of direct Managers and indirect Analyst reports. Accountable for team's accuracy, thought process, timeliness, and viability of recommendations
  • Empower, support, and develop talent as the next generation of leaders to perform to their maximum potential. Strengthen the quality of the team through capability development, talent management, succession planning and recruiting
  • Champion the organization and advocate solutions in the overall company's best interest
  • Create a strong, mutually supportive work spirit and culture where people can do their best

Qualifications

  • 15+ years’ experience in retail/CPG company/consulting with progressively increasing responsibility
  • Bachelor’s degree in business, finance, supply chain, analytics preferred
  • 10+ years’ experience building, leading, motivating teams
  • Expert Knowledge of retail, merchandising and end-to-end supply chain process in a multi-channel retail environment
  • Merchandising/Assortment planning experience including management, assortment planning, financial planning, item planning, location planning, category management
  • Mastery of Category Management principles and terminology; Uses syndicated data (SPINS/IRI/Nielsen) to assist in business analytics
  • Experience with Space/Assortment Planning tools such as RELEX, JDA/Blue Yonder
  • Demonstrated success in communicating across various levels across organizations, aligning teams to strategic vision, and motivating teams to execute change
  • Analytical mindset with detail orientation and entrepreneurial work ethic – in short, a “general athlete”
  • Demonstrated success in leading teams and efforts to maximize space productivity
  • Proven ability to translate data into insights and insights into strategy and be the voice of the market
  • Builds capacity of individuals and teams through effective employee development, involvement, communication, and supervision efforts
  • Considers the ultimate impact of decisions and actions on internal and external customers
  • Ability to present and calibrate on critical challenges on the executive level
