Associate Vice President for Philanthropic Giving (Administrator III) - University Advancement

Job Summary:

Under the general direction of the Vice President for University Advancement, the Associate Vice President for Philanthropic Giving is responsible for the planning and management of major, planned, and annual gift programs, corporate and foundation relations, and donor relations for California State University, San Bernardino (CSUSB) and CSUSB, Palm Desert. The Associate Vice President (AVP) will lead and direct a team of 10 professionals, including two staff members at the Palm Desert Campus.

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Management and planning of the major gifts program to ensure sound business practice and quality of service in all operations.
  • Lead and direct major, planned, and annual gift programs, corporate and foundation relations, and donor relations.
  • Oversee the principal gifts team to develop fundraising plans, the annual giving team to increase the donor base, the corporate and foundation relations team to expand the grants program, and the donor relations team to effectively steward donors and friends of the university.
  • Responsible for the administration of the program, department, or division.
  • Manage a portfolio of high wealth prospects and staff the Philanthropy Committee of the CSUSB Philanthropic Foundation.
  • Ongoing employee management including orientation, continuing education, performance evaluations, annual strategic plans and professional development.
  • Identify support and staffing needs, formulate policies, and manage operations.
  • Collaborate in the development of campaign initiatives and messages.
  • Assist the vice president with special projects and other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications: Required Education and Experience

  • Master’s degree from an accredited university
  • 8-11 years of professional and supervisory experience

Required Qualifications

  • Proven management experience of development professionals and support staff.
  • Experience in securing principal gifts.
  • Experience in working with volunteer leadership.
  • Experience with budget preparation, planning, and management.
  • Experience planning and executing a comprehensive campaign.
  • Strong communication skills: written, verbal, and listening.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 5 - 7 years of substantial, progressively responsible, and successful major gifts
  • Fundraising experience. 
  • Fundraising experience in a large, complex university.
  • Experience collaborating with offices of alumni relations.
  • Experience working with athletics departments.
  • Experience working with remote staff or satellite campuses.
  • Experience with planned giving programs.
  • Familiarity with the Inland Empire and Coachella Valley regions.
  • Knowledge and understanding of academic governance and its relationship to an effective fundraising program in higher education.
  • Demonstrated passion for helping to provide affordable access to a high-quality education.
  • High level of integrity, initiative, creativity, and energy.
  • Working knowledge of the principles and practices of development in higher education or non-profit organizations.
  • Demonstrated ability to conceptualize and implement complex development programs, including the ability to envision and articulate future direction.
  • Leadership skills to inspire confidence and motivate others.
  • Well organized, focused, and goal-oriented.
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team, working well collectively and collaboratively with colleagues to achieve common goals.
  • Management skills to effectively organize, direct, motivate, and evaluate professional and support staff and volunteers.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, organize and coordinate activities that move individuals from a prospect to a donor.
  • Persuasive presentation skills to large and small groups.
  • Experience with information systems and databases that support institutional advancement.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills with the ability to interact effectively with academic leaders, faculty, staff, donors, civic leaders, and volunteers.
  • Sound judgment and strong problem-solving skills.

Compensation and Benefits:

Anticipated Hiring Range: $175,000 - $200,000

Classification Salary Range: $6563 - $21,066 per month

The salary offered will take into account internal equity and experience among other factors.

The CSU system provides a comprehensive benefit package that includes medical, dental and vision plans, membership in the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS), sick and vacation time, and 15 paid holidays a year. Position Information:

Work status: Full-time/Exempt/At-will

Academic year schedule: Monday through Friday (8:00 am – 5:00 pm), some evenings/weekends.

Summer schedule: Monday through Thursday (7:00 am - 5:30 pm), some evenings/weekends.

This is a full-time management (MPP) position. MPP employees serve at the pleasure of the campus President. MPPs do not serve a probationary period and never receive permanent status.

This position is a "designated position" in the California State University's Conflict of Interest Code. The successful candidate accepting this position is required to file Conflict of Interest forms subject to the regulations of the Fair Political Practices Commission.

First considerations will be given to candidates who apply by Monday, April 14 2024. and will continue until the position is filled; however, the position may close when an adequate number of qualified applications are received.

As of January 1, 2022, the CSU Out-of-State Employment Policy prohibits the hiring of employees to perform CSU-related work outside the state of California.

Background Check

Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.
