Purpose of Role

This role is responsible for product management and product marketing for specific product nameplates with the McLaren Automotive product range

Principal Accountabilities

The Product Manager will with the support of Product Analyst deliver four distinct disciplines of Product Management for each product line:

Product Definition:

  • Working with the Product Planning function to deliver the board approved product plan, Product Management is responsible for taking the initial business case assumptions (volume, price and technical specification) and developing the product definition through the McLaren Development Process (MDP) process from G-2 onwards.
  • Propose and agree with Director – Product Planning on appropriate level of market or consumer research required for each live project, and commission research as required.
  • Volume and Pricing: In line with the corporate strategy and utilising the methodology developed by the Product Planning function, set the projected long-term sales volumes, market mix and price positioning. These should be periodically refined in function of the competitive landscape and current brand performance. Coordinate with the Commercial Operations function to hand over operation responsibility for short-term volume and pricing 12mths from start of production. 

Product Marketing:

  • Definition of target customer profile, utilising segmentation data, regional intelligence and source of sales analysis
  • Preparation of key strategic marketing messages and the technical product detail.
  • Working with colleagues from Global Marketing and PR to contribute to positioning documents and the design of dealer training programmes.
  • Presentation of forthcoming products to internal teams, including regional sales and marketing teams
  • Coordination with regional Product Specialists to ensure a) appropriate market specific requirements are fed into projects at the appropriate time b) regional teams are adequately trained on current product such that they can train the wider region team 

Product Development:

  • The McLaren Development Programme (MDP) provides the project management governance for the delivery of McLaren’s vehicle programmes.
  • Product Management represents the voice of the customer within MDP and is responsible for the ensuring the product specification is appropriate to achieve the commercial deliverables (vehicle and options revenue and margin).
  • Product Management will run the review mechanism with senior Commercial and Marketing personnel (Director – Product Strategy, CSMO, Head of Commercial Operations, Head of PR)
  • They will ensure the preparation of appropriate Gateway materials, ensuring proposals are persuasive and appropriately evidenced, built on a detailed knowledge of customer requirements and competitor offerings.

Product Management:

  • The Product Manager is responsible for chairing a weekly meeting of Sales & Marketing functions to monitor and steer the preparation for market launch and the subsequent commercial performance of the product. 
  • The Product Manager is responsible for measuring and optimising options contribution performance against target, including agreeing annual targets with regional teams.
  • Establish processes to monitor and forecast competitor activity with assessments on resulting opportunities or threats and necessary recommendation activities.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Extensive experience in Automotive Sales and Marketing including specific experience (5+ years) in product management and marketing.
  • Experienced people manager both of direct teams and indirect stakeholders
  • Experience of and direct involvement in product development programmes is highly desirable.
  • An in-depth understanding and experience of product pricing, value indexing and options analysis
  • Must be able to define and execute business processes and understand the importance of formal process to reduce risk and variance.
  • Expertise in presentation skills to both internal and external audiences
  • Experience in representing company values through interactions with HNW customers and automotive media.
