AARP’s Policy, Research and International Affairs leads the development and communication of AARP’s public policies and, research and insights on the issues that matter to people 50-plus.

The Library Technical Services Manager serves as the technical lead for library functions and system administration, including system analysis, monitoring performance, and user access. Oversees the integration of Library management systems, databases, and digital resources. Leverages research tools and provides guidance and training on the use and availability of library resources and research capabilities. Builds relevant digital and print collections and resources to support and deliver research insights and inform organizational needs. Develops and promotes innovative programs and events to increase awareness.

Responsibilities

  • Establishes relationships with key clients and issue area groups and develops subject matter and resource expertise. Develops an understanding of the issue area, client business and informational needs.
  • Manages secondary research projects. Conducts and delivers comprehensive secondary research insights and synthesis including corporate due diligence and legal research on potential partners and service providers. Performs people vetting research using investigative and criminal/public records databases.
  • Develops and manages project work plans, selects appropriate information sources, and evaluates and identifies new sources to introduce to the enterprise. Consults and advises clients on the best information sources and serves as an ongoing resource. Builds relevant collections and resources to support and deliver research insights.
  • Manages and shares information, data, and insights to insight sharing platform. Ensures up-to-date research is readily accessible. Contributes and serves as lead in the management, design, and maintenance of metadata within library systems.
  • Manages all aspects of technical service-related questions including online database and general digital access, creating and editing webpages, and developing and processing print and online collections. Leads collection acquisition and development and investigates, analyzes, and plans in order to develop future services. Initiates and leads the technical requirements for access to electronic resources.
  • Leads the amplification of the library by developing and promoting a variety of innovative programs and events. Provides in-person and virtual orientations and trainings to staff, ready reference and technical services in the physical library and answers questions using a variety of print, electronic and other sources. Integrates digital information literacy concepts into the full range of library services, in a group and one-on-one reference and instruction.
  • Develops and manages enterprise partnerships and vendor relationships. Manages resources and negotiates service and pricing.
  • Evaluates and integrates new or existing technologies into library operations and highlights emerging technology trends to increase awareness of digital access digital literacy.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Library and Information Science (MLIS or MLS) from an ALA – accredited institution.
  • 5+ years of experience performing library services, delivering both technical and reference services.
  • Experience in system administration, configuration, access, and daily operations of internal Knowledge Management(Insights Hub) and Integrated Library Systems (EOS), and various other research databases.
  • Experience overseeing activities of vendor resources assigned to perform systems administration, post-maintenance, content management, and reporting activities. Experience working with third-party vendors for library and other technical systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively troubleshoot technical problems, isolate causes, and implement solutions; demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with others to integrate technology into the provision of library services.
  • Knowledge of current and emerging trends and technologies with an understanding of the impacts on library processes including Generative AI, Chat Bots, and Virtual Reality.
  • Experience in analyzing all library resources and usage, and report as needed to support collection management and all library operations.
  • Well-versed in principles and practices of online searching including search construction and strategy including Boolean Logic of Research Databases (LexisNexis, Westlaw, EBSCO).
  • Ability to apply critical thinking in prioritizing work and exercise flexibility when needed to pivot.

Flexible Work Arrangement (FWA)

AARP observes Mondays and Fridays as telecommuting workdays, except for essential functions. Remote work and telecommuting can only be done within the United States and its territories.
