Our Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts Consumer & Strategic Insights team is looking for an innovative Data Visual Design Strategist ready to activate their creativity and meticulous design with their collaborative style. Someone who is able to conceptualize and tell stories with data that drives our business forward. And someone who has an ability to work both independently as well as with writer and production partners. Are you ready? 

The Role

The Consumer & Strategic Insights Team at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts leads the insights and measurement generation and strategy that ensures we understand our members’ wants and needs. To help further advance that strategy, our team is looking for an innovative Data Visual Design Strategist. Reporting to the Director of Strategic Insights, the Data Visual Design Strategist organizes information and data to convey meaning to executives, business partners and stakeholders. Applicants should have a passion for conveying simplicity while solving complex problems. Well-versed in data visualization, data concepts, user-centered design, and Agile development. You will need to use your design skills to analyze, synthesize, and realize complex data narratives as well as your UI skills to present these solutions in a clear, clean, and intuitive manner. You will understand data/business requirements to properly translate it into visualizations that will be used to deliver engaging, effective, and actionable presentations which are easily understood by a cross-functional audience with varying knowledge of customer experience and data. 

The Data Visual Design Strategist will utilize a passion for visual storytelling and push creative boundaries while multitasking in a fast-paced environment and meeting tight deadlines without sacrificing quality or accuracy of work.

The skill set needed to tell a story with data includes a variety of soft skills, such as creativity, communication, and the ability to craft a narrative that will be meaningful to audiences. This role requires outstanding design judgment, flexibility and agility to support evolving needs. An understanding of healthcare and consumer experience are preferred. This person will have demonstrated experience and expertise creating compelling graphics and visualizations showcasing various customer experience artifacts including customer research findings, customer experience measurement, and performance metrics.

The successful candidate will have the ability to effectively communicate insights from a dataset using narratives and visualizations leveraging three key components:

  • Data: Data serves as the foundation of the story. Analyzing data using descriptive, diagnostic, predictive, and prescriptive analysis enables understanding of the full picture.
  • Narrative: A verbal or written storyline to communicate insights from the data and the actions recommended for the audience.
  • Visualizations: Visual representations of the data and narrative (charts, graphs, diagrams, pictures, videos) to communicate the story clearly and memorably, while working within established Brand Guidelines.

Responsibilities and Accountabilities

  • Collaborate with Strategic Insights colleagues and business partners to define the data narrative. Understand the importance of the context and the narrative to create visuals that are effective and appropriate for all audiences
  • Implement a design that facilitates immediate understanding. Create clear and concise visuals to focus the audience and ensure the desired data story is simply conveyed.
  • Create engaging graphic designs and produce a wide range of visual assets including but not limited to infographics, presentations, data visualizations, operating models and processes. 
  • Demonstrate hands-on tactics of creating compelling communications experiences based on surveys, scientific research, public or proprietary data sources
  • Leverage graphic design tools, such as the Adobe Creative Suite, to craft creative and engaging designs consistent with BCBSMA’s overall brand vision.
  • Have a growth mindset - take creative direction and respond positively to feedback.
  • Maintain project timelines and actively communicate updates with manager and internal clients.
  • Ensure all projects are completed within identified timelines and budgets.
  • Build and maintain a set of data design best practices and guidelines to reduce and minimize production efforts when possible.
  • Coach and facilitate conversations between researchers, analytic units and non-technical partners to help surface actionable insights among various data stories for the organization.

Qualifications

  • Ability to understand data and translate it into visuals that convey the appropriate story and context to an audience with varying knowledge bases.
  • Integrates data visualization best practices.
  • Experience developing modern graphics, charts, infographics, animations, hyperlinking, transitions, video, and more.
  • Expert problem-solving skills and ability to effectively operates within an iterative team.
  • Ability to work with a variety of business partners to understand and fulfill project requirements and strategy when developing assets.
  • Excellent time management skills and the ability to support multiple projects, simultaneously.
  • Able to operate and thrive in fast-moving, evolving environments, with clear goals and clear priorities.

Technical Skills

  • Proficient in Adobe Creative Cloud suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign)
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (PowerPoint, Word)
  • Experience using content management system / DAM
  • Understanding of HTML (no programming required)
  • Expert-level skills in Microsoft PowerPoint and Adobe Creative Cloud software. Working knowledge of video editing tools (After Effect, Premiere Pro) and experience using prototyping tools (Adobe XD) is a plus. Experience with Tableau and Ceros a plus.
  • Familiar with automated workflow systems such as Adobe Workfront + Jira

General Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or equivalent project/training/work experience in area of design including one of the following: Arts, Graphic Design, User Interface Design, Digital Design.
  • 8-10 years experience in business, design and data visualization.
  • Portfolio showcasing skills in designing data visualizations, process models, compelling PowerPoints, and other business creative assets.
  • Excellent communication, organizational and problem-solving skills.
  • Prior work in healthcare, customer experience, marketing, or internal communications is a plus.
  • Understands design applications in traditional and emerging channels. Extremely strong communications and presentation skills, deck building and design acumen.
  • Demonstrates creative conceptualization, design, and layout skills.
  • States opinions clearly and presents visual concepts verbally.
  • Adapts to changing priorities, deadlines, and directions.
  • Meticulous attention to detail, accountable for accuracy.
  • Works autonomously with excellent time management skills.
  • High degree of initiative; ability to work both independently and within a team.

Salary Range: $120,510.00 - $147,290.00

The job posting range is the lowest to highest salary we in good faith believe we would pay for this role at the time of this posting. We may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range, and the range may be modified in the future. An employee’s pay position within the salary range will be based on several factors including, but limited to, relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, performance, shift, travel requirements, sales or revenue-based metrics, and business or organizational needs and affordability.

This job is also eligible for variable pay.
