Systems Engineer – Product Requirements

Development

The Systems Requirements Engineer will develop, decompose, analyze, and trace multiple levels of system requirements during New Product Development projects. Additionally, the Systems Requirement Engineer will support Sustainment teams in maintaining, managing, and ensure change control of the requirements

following change management processes & leveraging requirements management tools & systems.

RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Leads work to develop and document complex electro-mechanical system requirements.
  • Manages product and systems requirements, specifications, and decomposition/flow-down of high-level requirements data into appropriate level of detail
  • Responsible for defining technical product requirements of Systems, Sub-Systems, Modules, & Component. Manages interfaces & traceability across different layers of requirements
  • Leads and coordinates work to analyze and translate requirements into system architecture, hardware and software designs and interface specifications.
  • Leads/participate in peer reviews of requirements, documentation review, and requirements approval process
  • Driving continuous improvement of client’s Requirements Mgmt process and supporting systems

SKILLS

  • Systems Engineering Knowledge & Thinking:
  • Understanding of systems engineering principles, methodologies, and best practices. Thorough understanding of the Systems Engineering V-Model and model components that contribute to requirements development & management.
  • Ability to understand and analyze the system as a whole, considering interactions between subsystems, interfaces, and external interfaces. Skills in Systems Block Diagramming to define Systems, Sub-Systems, & the interactions betwween
  • Requirements Elicitation & Decomposition: Proficiency in eliciting, documenting, and analyzing requirements from stakeholders, including customers, end-users, and other project team members. This may include conducting interviews, workshops, surveys, and other elicitation techniques to capture stakeholder needs and expectations.
  • Requirements Management Tools: Familiarity with requirements management tools and software, such as Visure, IBM DOORS, Jama Connect, or Microsoft Azure DevOps, to capture, trace, and manage requirements throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Technical Aptitude: Strong technical experience in the domain of the system being developed, whether it's software, hardware, or a combination of both. This includes understanding relevant technologies, architectures, and interfaces to ensure that requirements are technically feasible and achievable.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, to effectively communicate requirements to diverse stakeholders, including engineers, designers, project managers, and customers. This includes the ability to articulate complex technical concepts in clear and understandable terms.
  • Problem-solving: Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to identify, analyze, and resolve conflicts or inconsistencies in requirements. Systems Requirements Engineers must be able to propose creative solutions to address stakeholder needs while considering technical, schedule, and budget constraints.
  • Risk Management: Proficiency in identifying and managing risks associated with requirements, including ambiguities, omissions, and conflicting priorities. This involves conducting risk assessments, prioritizing requirements, and developing mitigation strategies to minimize project risks.
  • Change Management: Ability to effectively manage changes to requirements throughout the project lifecycle. Systems Requirements Engineers should establish robust change control processes to assess the impact of proposed changes, obtain stakeholder approval, and update documentation accordingly.
  • Team Collaboration: Collaboration skills to work effectively with multidisciplinary teams, including product managers, sales & marketing, regulatory affairs, engineers, designers, test engineers. Systems Requirements Engineers should foster a collaborative environment where stakeholders can contribute to requirements definition and validation.
  • Quality Assurance: Understanding of quality assurance principles and practices to ensure that requirements are complete, consistent, and verifiable. Systems Requirements Engineers should establish quality criteria and metrics to assess the quality of requirements documentation and traceability.
  • MBSE (Model Based Systems Engineering): Understanding of the integration process for linking System Models to Requirements (preferred skillset).

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • BS in Electrical, Mechanical, Mechatronics, or Systems Engineering or equivalent from an ABET accredited four-year college or university. 
  • 3-6+ years of electro-mechanical systems design engineering experiences, project leadership experience preferred.
  • 3+ years of requirements management functional leadership preferred
  • Experience in requirements decomposition, development, authoring, and verification. 
  • Experience with requirements management tools (e.g. Visure, Cameo, DOORs, Jama) and interface control documentation preferred.
  • Must be able to find and analyze electric product safety standards and assist teams with their understanding & interpretation of the standards.
  • Experience with Industry Standards including B-type functional safety standards (e.g. ISO 13849, IEC 62061) and C-type end-product standards (e.g. IEC 60335-1, IEC 63327 & CSA 336) and process for capturing within Product Requirements management systems
  • Experience with MBSE (Model Based Systems Engineering) integration with Requirements (preferred)
  • Experiences with battery powered equipment preferred
  • Experiences with Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMR) preferred
