Departmental Overview

The UC Berkeley Library System is an internationally renowned research and teaching facility at the nation's top public university. In a highly diverse and intellectually rich environment, the Library serves a campus community of undergraduate students, graduate students, faculty and the larger public. Our workforce is mostly on the central campus. We are currently seeking a Leadership Gift Officer (Fundraiser 3) who will work within the department’s development/fundraising unit to help increase philanthropic support for the Library.

Responsibilities

  • Identifies, qualifies, cultivates, solicits and stewards a portfolio of donors focusing on gifts of leadership prospects for increased levels of annual support for the Library, focusing on gifts of $1,000 to $100,000 with a special emphasis on the Library’s fundraising priority areas.
  • Qualifies, cultivates, and solicits major and planned gifts as a related area of focus.
  • Manages a prospect portfolio of 150-250 prospects using a combination of in-person contact combined with email, phone, social media, video, and text message.
  • Conducts 6-7 visits per month/72-84 visits per year (in-person, online, or via phone) to solicit annual gifts, cultivate and solicit major gifts and planned gifts, and/or steward current donors.
  • Develops strategies to ensure that all prospects are solicited each fiscal year at appropriate levels.
  • Collaborates and partners with a variety of colleagues across the Library and the greater campus as necessary to ensure all tracked prospects are adequately engaged, solicited, and stewarded.
  • Identifies new major and/or planned gift prospects, and conducts major/planned gift proposal development and solicitation activities, in consultation with others in Library Development Office and University Development and Alumni Relations when appropriate.
  • Takes on shared responsibility for ensuring the integrity of our donor database including adding timely contact reports and updating data points including biographical details, contact information, relationships, etc.
  • Ensures that predetermined fundraising goals are met.
  • Plans, schedules, and implements fundraising and alumni relations projects and programs, to build relationships, and conduct annual fund outreach, leadership gift solicitations, alumni relations and stewardship efforts, and related donor engagement activities.
  • Serves as the lead or in a support role in managing various programs directed towards instilling a culture of giving back to the Library. Examples include the Library Board, The Council of Friends of the Bancroft Library, reunion events / campaigns, UC Berkeley giving day (Big Give), donor appreciation activities, donor challenge matches, leadership donor engagement events, etc.
  • Assists in detailed planning of fund development and annual solicitation programs.
  • Participates in short- and long-range planning to foster a professional learning and growth mindset.
  • Partners with subject matter experts and experts and for, and fundraising and communications colleagues from the Library and campus to engage donors, understand their philanthropic interests and develop donor solicitations within existing policy guidelines that are aligned with the Library's philanthropic needs and goals.
  • Collaborates with colleagues in developing and implementing best practices for qualifying, engaging, soliciting and stewarding donors.
  • Embraces the principle of being a "student always" by engaging in opportunities for training, workshops, seminars, continuing education pertinent to the position, or at the suggestion of the supervisor.
  • Actively contributes to a team environment that fosters and promotes a culture of diversity, equity, inclusion, justice and belonging (DEIJB) at the Library.
  • Engages in ongoing education to promote diversity, equity, inclusion & belonging by completing University sponsored certifications & training sessions (i.e. MEP Workshop, Implicit Bias Certification, LinkedIn Learning workshops, and other workshops & seminars offered by the University or the Library, as they are made available) or by engaging in external seminars & resources related to DEIB.
  • Exemplifies the Library values and campus principles of community.
  • Clearly documents the plans, interactions and outcomes of donor engagements to ensure consistent understanding of fundraising and stewardship efforts with Library and campus colleagues, and other duties as assigned.
  • Completes other duties as assigned, including training mandated by the state legislature, and some evening or weekend work.

Required Qualifications

  • Thorough working knowledge of fundraising, donor relations, and public relations concepts, principles, procedures, and techniques to advance annual programs, campaigns, donor events and major gifts.
  • Strong knowledge of applicable laws, rules, regulations, policies, etc., related to fundraising and acceptance of gifts in accordance with university policies and federal regulations.
  • Strong written and interpersonal communication skills to establish and maintain good working relationships throughout the organization.
  • Ability to write effective letters of appeal and of acknowledgement for the signature of the University Librarian.
  • Excellent persuasive skills, and demonstrated ability to describe funding opportunities to donors.
  • Strong organizational, analytical and critical thinking skills, including skills in creative and effective decision-making and problem identification / avoidance / resolution, and project management skills.
  • Technical proficiency with computers – MS Office and Google Suites, and demonstrated ability to learn proprietary software such as CADS.
  • Strong skills in maintaining confidentiality, mindful of sensitive topics, gifts, or high-profile donors.

Education/Training:

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Thorough working knowledge of and/or the ability to learn the location, its vision, mission, goals, objectives, achievements and infrastructure.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $85,000.00 - $110,000.00. The full range for this position is $85,800.00 - $158,200.00.

  • This is a 100%, full-time (40 hours per week), career position that is eligible for full UC benefits.
  • This position is exempt and paid monthly.
  • This position is not eligible for 100% remote work.
