Academic Services Intern Development Program

Program Overview

The USF Academic Services Intern Development Program provides a dynamic professional opportunity for direct experience in daily academic support services for student-athletes, program development, mentoring and fulfilling a key role on staff as a part of our collaborative team. As a part of the position, Academic Interns will be working with a diverse population of student-athletes with varying levels of academic proficiency. The University of South Florida and our Academic Services Unit holds itself to a high standard. All staff are expected to practice the same inclusive, ethical, personal, and academic integrity standards held by USF Athletics, the Fishman Family Student-Athlete Enrichment Center and the Office of Undergraduate Studies. Academic Interns will also participate in a dynamic professional development curriculum and cross-training to establish a strong base knowledge and skill set relating to all roles within academic services in athletics. The program will introduce roles within athletics and the campus community, promoting the building of the Academic Intern’s professional network and preparing them for a full-time position in the field. Academic Interns will receive valuable feedback on their professional development and demonstration of essential professional skills.

Academic Interns are an integral part of the development, administration, and evaluation of the academic support programs provided to our student-athletes through USF Athletics and the Office of Undergraduate Studies. Our Academic Services programming emphasizes the identification of academic concerns, promotes academic accountability and monitors student-athletes’ academic and personal transition to the university environment. Academic Interns will work jointly with relevant Academic Services, Athletic Department, and USF Campus Staff in the coordination of skill development and academic support for our student-athletes.

Academic Interns will be assigned to work directly with Academic Services staff members, assigned student-athlete caseloads and will be expected to:

  • Develop, administer and evaluate the comprehensive academic support program provided to their caseloads of student-athletes
  • Foster a student-focused environment conducive to learning and building key skills necessary for academic and personal responsibility including critical thinking, writing, reading, note taking, study strategies, time management, and academic self-advocacy
  • Supervise structured academic support sessions (i.e. small group learning, one-on-one, etc.)
  • Create, manage and submit weekly academic reports and updates
  • Support Academic Services Staff with continuing eligibility tracking and the Athletics certification process
  • Assist in coordination and management of IGNITE Athletics Summer Bridge Program
  • Work with supervisors on various day-to-day charges and standing projects with our campus partners and academic community

  • Collaborate with the Student-Athlete Enhancement staff in providing student-athlete development programming as needed
  • Assist in the facilitation of tutor appointment requests
  • Assist in the facilitation of scholarship book process
  • Participate in projects as assigned by supervisor
  • Perform general administrative tasks and other duties as assigned
