Position Details:

Five Learning Coach positions - four in the Writing Center and one in Academic Support & Innovations.

  • Three regular, full-time positions, 40 hours per week, 12 months per year in the Writing Center.
  • One regular, full-time position, 40 hours per week, 12 months per year in Academic Support & Innovations.
  • One regular, part-time position, 18 hours per week (0.45 FTE), 10 months spread over 12 months in the Writing Center.

The actual work schedules for these positions will be discussed and agreed upon between the employee and the supervisor; however these positions will work the majority of their hours during the Learning Centers open service times. Please note, the work schedule varies each semester based on service hours and staff preferences for work shifts.

(Fall 2023) The Learning Centers are open seven days a week:

  • Monday-Thursday: 9am-11pm
  • Friday: 11am-4pm
  • Saturday: 12pm-5pm
  • Sunday: 2pm-9pm

The Learning Centers operate at (hours vary by location):

  • Oceanside Campus (Oceanside, CA)
  • San Elijo Campus (Cardiff, CA)
  • Community Learning Center (Oceanside, CA)
  • Online via Zoom

The person selected for this position will be subject to assignment to any district facility during any hours of operation.

The first-level interviews with the screening and interview committee will be conducted via Zoom. The second-level interviews may be in-person or via Zoom.

REMOTE WORK:

MiraCosta College believes that flexible work enables employees to achieve a more successful balance between work responsibilities and family life. The District offers the opportunity to telework (remote work) for certain positions, depending on the operational needs of the District and the provisions of the telework policy. Probationary and temporary employees are not eligible to telework unless approved by the appropriate vice president. No employee is guaranteed the right to telework. No employee shall be authorized to telework 100% of the time; regular, on-campus presence is expected for all District employees on a weekly basis.

RESIDENCY REQUIREMENT:

MiraCosta College Board Policy 7800: Employee Residency requires all classified staff, administrators, and temporary/hourly short-term employees to maintain and permanently reside in a principal place of residence in the state of California that is within two-hundred (200) road miles from the employee's regularly assigned district worksite. The purpose of the policy is to promote efficiency and continuity throughout all campus administrative functions, provide students with high quality assistance and accessibility to all academic and campus services, ensure that students receive an engaging education, and respond to emerging student needs.

The District may consider an individual request to temporarily reside outside of the State of California or outside the 200-mile limit on a case-by-case basis, not to exceed twelve consecutive months.

Salary Range: 22

Compensation: For the full-time, 40 hours per week, 12 month positions:Starting at $68,903 per year (range 22, step 1), with annual salary step increases up to step 5. In addition, after five years of district service, employees earn a longevity stipend that increases over time.For the part-time, 18 hours per week, 10 months spread over 12 months position:

Starting at $33.13 per hour, $25,838.63 per year (range 22, step 1), with annual salary step increases up to step 5. In addition, after five years of district service, employees earn a longevity stipend that increases over time.

Employees must make arrangements for the direct deposit of paychecks into the financial institution of their choice, via electronic fund transfer.

Retired STRS members are not eligible for this position.

Basic Function:

Under general supervision, provide routine-to-advanced equity-minded coaching and academic tutoring services and lead-level work direction to student workers and assigned temporary/hourly staff; assist students in achieving learning outcomes.

1. Provide equity-minded coaching and tutoring services and develop study skills for diverse learners.

2. Create learning objectives, formulate strategies, diagnose student needs, and make recommendations.

3. Direct students to available resources including accommodations as needed.

4. Work with others to develop and provide support services.

5. Contribute to planning, administrative, continuous improvement, and logistical support.

6. Participate in selecting, training, and providing day-to-day lead work direction and mentorship to student workers and assigned temporary/hourly staff.

7. Monitor interpersonal interactions within the centers and assist in interpersonal conflict resolution.

8. Assist in the development and implementation of data monitoring systems; gather, validate, and summarize statistical information; create analytical reports and make recommendations.

9. Organize and participate in meetings, events and activities; chaperone travel.

As Assigned to Writing Center:

Focus on assessing writing and communication skills; evaluate writing samples, prioritize feedback issues, and create feedback utilizing video and software.

Other Duties:

1. Maintain supplies and equipment.

2. Engage in ongoing professional development, attend and present at conferences.

3. Perform related duties as assigned.

Education & Experience:

To be eligible for this position, you must meet and provide evidence of the following minimum qualifications:

Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor’s degree in a related field*, and one year of tutoring experience in an educational setting; or an equivalent com­bin­ation of training and experience.

  • For these Learning Coach positions in the Writing Center and Academic Support & Innovations, any bachelor’s degree will meet minimum qualifications.

NOTE: For work experience, one “year” is defined as equivalent to 40 hours per week for 12 months, or at least 2,080 hours.
