Job Summary

The energy system integration team at NREL is looking for an innovative and enthusiastic research engineer with a positive attitude and excellent collaboration skills to join our cutting-edge research team in NREL/DOE’s flagship Energy Systems Integration Facility (ESIF). The ideal candidate will bring strong expertise in modeling, simulation, and testing of renewable and distributed energy systems and their integration with electrical power systems. The candidate should have a track record of research in the field of distributed energy resources integrated with electric power systems and the ability to contribute to innovative research projects, proposals, and technical publications in this area. The successful candidate will contribute to research in developing electrical models, performing computer simulation studies, performing real-time simulations using hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) systems, and interfacing with and testing advanced distributed energy systems. Modeling will focus on renewable energy systems integration on electrical distribution systems and may include photovoltaics, wind, fuel cells, batteries, and wind turbines and various timescales (subcycle to many seconds).

The successful candidate will join the Integrated Devices and Systems (IDS) group within the Power Systems Engineering Center (PSEC) at NREL. The IDS group conducts research in grid technology hardware and control firmware/software; communications, interconnection, and interoperability standards development; and both device and integrated systems development and testing for supporting the operation of the future power system. IDS works closely with other groups within PSEC to support the science and technology goals of the U.S. Department of Energy and NREL toward a sustainable energy future. The center works with key stakeholders and partners to seamlessly integrate conventional and renewable sources, flexible loads, storage, and central and distributed generation enabling resilient, reliable, flexible, secure, sustainable, and affordable power systems at all scales.
