The NBCU News Group Product Design team is a diverse group of passionate, hard-working and highly collaborative people. We are looking for a strategic design leader who enjoys collaborating closely with content teams, product, engineering and other business stakeholders. In addition, we are seeking someone who is a detail-oriented, innovative, thought leader to join our team as our new Design Director and we are hoping it might be you.

You’ll have the opportunity to shape design strategy and vision for our cross-platform digital experiences, in ways that provide more value to our audiences. Our team values a human-centered, data-driven approach to product design, and your job will be motivating and driving the team to seek solutions, listen deeply, act with integrity and take ownership. You will be hands on while ensuring the team’s design, discovery & domain expertise are at level (and leveling up the org). In addition, you will shape your team’s career planning & growth with individual career plans & training.

The Job:

  • Shape design strategy and vision for NBC News Group Digital partner experiences, multi-brand design systems and cross-platform UX
  • Channel broader NBC News Group design vision, strategy and principles across your portfolio of news brands and products
  • Set cohesive brand strategy and vision to elevate our digital products and work with cross-functional teams to deliver value for customers and business
  • Innovate and ideate on how to get the work done as well as on the work itself
  • Lead, coach, mentor and direct a talented team of data-driven, customer-centered product designers to design for interconnected screens, user flows, and prototypes
  • Manage stakeholder relationships and communication across your purview
  • Set the tone for team communication, managing peer and stakeholder expectations
  • Strong grasp of theories, concepts, and methods of UX research and user-centered design
  • Partner with Customer Experience and UX Research teams as necessary to discover consumer needs and opportunities; align resources to execute
  • Model and share frameworks to do design research, synthesis, ideation and facilitation
  • Ensures team’s hard skills in design, discovery, and domain expertise are at level
  • Coach and advocate for your team, inspiring and elevating them to their best potential
  • Actively manage direct reports, set goals and provide follow-up feedback
  • Manages career growth of team through 1:1 feedback and assignments, OR
  • Provide regular feedback and manage career development

Qualifications

  • 10+ years of experience as a product designer with successful outcomes for digital products, reaching millions of users, preferably in a media context
  • 7+ years of experience hiring, managing, and mentoring successful product designers

You demonstrate:

  • Proven track record managing high performing team(s) of in-house designers who were embedded in Pods, Agile or Scrum teams
  • Design best practices, integrating UX Research and building meaningful customer experiences
  • Expertise in design research with a dedicated human-centered approach to problem solving
  • Strong experience in product discovery and design thinking, in particular leading design workshops with cross-functional stakeholders
  • Excellent communication and presentation capabilities, articulating ideas effectively and without bias
  • High energy level and a strong work ethic, someone who is self-driven
  • Systems-thinking mindset, with deep knowledge of cross-platform design & visual system creation and effective implementation
  • Digital platform, design system, domain space (video, authentication, e-commerce) and news industry subject matter expertise
  • An active, participatory role in defining how, what and why the work you do is approached and executed (explain the “why”)
  • Prioritization and multi-tasking skills
  • Comfort with integrating design operations into your team process
  • Ability to hold your team accountable for high quality product design and timely cross-functional communication
  • A sense of humor and gratitude for others

Hybrid: This position has been designated as hybrid, generally contributing from the office a minimum of three days per week.

This position is eligible for company sponsored benefits, including medical, dental and vision insurance, 401(k), paid leave, tuition reimbursement, and a variety of other discounts and perks. Salary range: $180,000 - $220,000 (bonus eligible)
