Job Description

The incumbent will ideally have a background in Molecular and Cellular Pharmacology, Biology, Neurology, Cancer Biology, or other related field. The Assistant Professor (AP) will manage postdoctoral fellows and their research projects, and will supervise research projects of interns, undergraduate or graduate students. The AP may lecture or conduct demonstrations and teach across UM schools. The AP will partner and collaborate with faculty in the Department of Molecular and Cellular Pharmacology, and perhaps other departments throughout UM, to advance knowledge, training, and education.

Key Areas of Responsibility

  • Conduct reliable and independent laboratory research on current department studies. Areas of particular interest include the study of directed differentiation, reprogramming and morphogenesis involving adult somatic cells, embryonic stem cells, or induced pluripotent stem cells. Additional subjects of importance may include basic or translational studies of cancer cells focusing on breast or leukemia/lymphoma related malignancies, regenerative medicine centered on spinal cord injury, ocular injury, or cardiology.
  • Individual will be responsible for participating in graduate student teaching and university service activities.
  • Individual will write and submit grant proposals, select and recommend equipment, define duties of laboratory personnel, supervise laboratory personnel and/or graduate students, collect and analyze data, and write and submit scientific papers and abstracts.
  • Support of the department of Molecular and Cellular Pharmacology’s education mission. 

Qualifications

The faculty member for the Department of Molecular and Cellular Pharmacology will need to meet the following requirements:

Requirements (essential)

  • MD/MPH, MD/PhD, or PhD in Pharmacology, Neurology, Cancer Biology, or other related field.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and application of scientific techniques
  • Demonstrated experience in running a lab, funded research projects, and/or supervising post-docs
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to work with diverse constituency
  • Completion of successful post-doctoral work that has resulted in co-authorship of papers in peer reviewed journals while serving as a postdoctoral fellow and/or research instructor.
  • Demonstrates ability to develop collaborative research projects in a manner consistent with the mentor’s research plan and contribute towards the making of scientific advances in the field of work.
  • Demonstrates ability to teach in the laboratory setting and/or through presentations of papers and/or seminars.
  • Contribution to grant applications that are collaborative in nature with the mentor and/or demonstrated ability to write competitive grants independently.
