The Department partners with multi-departmental centers such as the Cancer Center, the Center for Cardiovascular Research or the Center for Bioinformatics and Quantitative Biology as well as clinical departments with strong research programs. These partnerships have allowed the department to nurture multi-disciplinary collaborations in several areas of research. Our faculty are also actively engaged in entrepreneurial efforts as manifested by the founding of biotech start-ups in Chicago’s burgeoning biotechnology ecosystem.

UIC offers an intellectually exciting, collegial, and supportive environment with several NIH-funded training grants to support predoctoral and postdoctoral trainees. The department participates in several PhD programs including the umbrella Graduate Education in Biomedical Sciences (GEMS) PhD program in the molecular and cellular life sciences, as well as PhD programs in Bioinformatics, Biomedical Engineering or Chemistry.

Collaboration and co-mentoring across different departments are hallmarks of the research community at the University. Together with Northwestern University and the University of Chicago, UIC is part of the Chicago Biomedical Consortium, which provides cross-institutional access to state of art core facilities at each of the three partner institutions. UIC is a public tier 1 research institution, one of the top 10 universities in the United States in terms of promoting social mobility, and a federally designated minority-serving institution. UIC, its College of Medicine, and the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics are deeply committed to enhancing faculty diversity.
