Job Description:

HPE is seeking a Linux System Administrator to perform functions in a dynamic and operational environment supporting cloud-based repositories.

A successful candidate for this position has experience working with large Hadoop and Accumulo based clusters and interfacing with hardware, software, security, and network teams. Responsibilities include monitoring systems and resolving or escalating network and data flow alerts for cloud systems hardware, software or network issues. Experience with large Hadoop and Accumulo based clusters sustaining a strong background in troubleshooting operational system issues as they arise required.

Performance in a fast-paced mission environment where requirements change on a daily basis due to operational and world events. In this role, you will provide expert technical leadership and execution, and be supporting HPE’s mission-critical federal customers, providing pre-installation configuration, on-site integration, administration, and customer enablement of HPE’s cutting- edge high performance computing solution. Working at the direction of customer, you will respond directly to customer requests and assignments, and provide technical and operational leadership and guidance as needed.

Location: Role is on-site at a customer location in Columbia, Maryland or Manassas, Virginia

Key Responsibilities:

  • Degree (or equivalent) in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering or related technical discipline or equivalent industry experience
  • Strong collaboration skills; works well on a team
  • Excellent communication and troubleshooting skills
  • Flexible, proactive, ability to work with minimal direction in an open and fast-paced environment
  • Strong technical skills and proven ability to provide technical support
  • Demonstrated ability to identify customer requirements and articulate across the team
  • Significant experience as a Linux System Administrator, with a focus on large Hadoop and Accumulo based clusters.
  • Proficiency in Bash and Python scripting.
  • Experience with configuration management tools, using tools like Puppet.
  • Familiarity with cloud-based repositories and associated technologies.
  • Strong background in troubleshooting operational system issues, especially in a fast-paced mission environment.
  • Ability to effectively interface with external teams, including hardware, network, and infrastructure support.
  • Understanding of and experience in implementing security measures for Linux systems.
  • Willingness to provide after-hours support and respond to changing requirements in a dynamic operational environment.
  • Security+ certification

DESIRED:

  • Strong knowledge of Information Technology Service Management, ITIL preferably
  • Experience working in customer environment
  • Ability to conduct on-the-job training
  • ServiceNow, Splunk experience
  • Understanding of physical computer hardware
  • Network configuration and network troubleshooting
  • Experience with Bash, Python, and configuration management tools such as Puppet preferred

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Regularly monitor the health and performance of cloud-based repositories, with a focus on large Hadoop and Accumulo based clusters.
  • Identify and resolve operational system issues promptly and effectively.
  • Manage and maintain storage systems associated with the Linux-based clusters.
  • Collaborate with hardware, software, security, and network teams to address and resolve issues related to cloud systems.
  • Be available for on-call/call-in support, including after-hours support, to address critical system issues.
  • Implement and maintain security measures to ensure the integrity and confidentiality of the systems.
  • Collaborate with engineering teams, providing input and insights into discussions related to system architecture and improvements.
  • Develop and maintain scripts, particularly using Bash and Python, for automation of routine tasks and system management.
  • Apply patches and upgrades to the Linux systems to ensure they are up-to-date and secure.
  • Create, modify, and manage user accounts, ensuring proper access controls.
  • Keep an accurate inventory of hardware resources associated with the Linux-based clusters.

Education and Experience Required:

  • Bachelors Degree and 12+ years of professional experience and a Master of Arts/Science or equivalent degree in computer science or related area of study. Without a Masters degree, three additional years of relevant professional experience (15+ years in total).
