Overview

The Associate Athletics Director of Development at Utah State University (Development Officer SR) provides overall guidance and management of the Department of Athletics strategic plan to advance the philanthropic investment to Aggie student-athletics. The position is responsible for the Department of Athletics overall acquisition of major gifts and evaluating gift officer performance. The Associate Athletics Director of Development will enhances the performance of other fundraisers by helping to develop fundraising competencies, providing feedback, perspective on fundraising approach/methods, and coaching achievement of goals to realize optimal performance.

Reporting to the Vice President of Advancement and the Vice President and Director of Athletics this position sets strategies and leads fundraising for the athletics enterprise.

As a development leader on the Utah State University development team, Associate Athletics Director of Development is highly collaborative, committed to a culture of excellence, demonstrates advanced fundraising competencies, and helps sustain USU’s fundraising success and growth through their leadership.

This position requires extensive public contact with high-level alumni, donors, and volunteers.

Travel is required.

Responsibilities

  • In partnership with the Vice President and Director of Athletics, plan, implement, and execute the athletics department campaign goals that complement the University’s comprehensive campaign objectives.
  • Lead the day-to-day planning and oversight of the Department of Athletics development strategy and drive fundraising activity related to major gift proposals, annual giving and stewardship activities.
  • Develop and implement both annual and long-range goals, objectives and strategies to maximize private support through various sources (individuals, corporations, foundations and planned giving vehicles) for individual colleges/units.
  • Collaborate with USU leaders and development peers to link donors’ passions with USU priorities and ensure a exceptional gift and/or engagement experience. 
  • Qualify, cultivate, solicit and steward major gift prospects for both the college and the university, emphasizing collaboration and high-level major gifts.
  • Develop and analyze prospect strategies through contact and trip reports and evaluate new prospects and general correspondence daily in the cultivation of major gifts.
  • Utilize the suite of advancement resources to provide regular individual and team progress reports on gift officer and unit performance.
  • Partner with prospect analytics and research, the principal gift workgroup and campaign operations to identify new donor opportunities, analyze team performance, implement effective practices and coordinate donor/campaign engagement for Athletics prospects.
  • Creates annual performance goals and meets with direct reports on a regular basis to ensure progress toward goals.
  • Creates a collegial, team-building work environment, motivating the development staff, and cultivating productive, collaborative relationships with all constituent groups.
  • Foster an inclusive team environment where all employees feel valued, their ideas welcomed, and their contributions affirmed.
  • Travel to key markets and regions to engage alumni, submit proposals, and steward donors.
  • Complete additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualification:

  • Bachelor’s degree plus five years of experience OR an equivalent combination of education and experience is required. 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • An advanced academic degree.
  • Experience with capital campaigns.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to have complex gift conversations and a track record of closing gifts or negotiating contracts.
  • Demonstrated experience building successful, productive and collaborative relationships with top university administrators, deans and board members.
  • Demonstrated experience staffing dean’s councils, advisory boards and committees.
  • Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills, as well as analytical, research and management skills.
  • Knowledge of, and commitment, to the use of information technology to support advancement programs.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, particularly with donors, volunteers and staff members from diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to position the Vice President for Athletics to maximize their potential as a fundraiser for the Athletics program.
  • Willingness and ability to travel; evening and weekend work is required.
  • Ability to work effectively with multiple stakeholders (students, alumni, faculty, coaches, and staff) from diverse backgrounds.
  • Adaptable to working in a fast-paced and high-energy environment.
