BRIEF POSITION SUMMARY:

The Senior Enterprise Architect is a key member of the IT team who sits at the intersection of product development and current and future technology vision. The EA is charged with driving the vision and execution of Carmax technology landscape across multiple business and technology teams. The EA plays a critical role in aligning business vision and technology strategy and championing this strategy across Product leadership team, Lead Developers, Solutions Architects and IT Infrastructure. Additionally, the EA, in conjunction with the AVP EA sets the standards and key objectives for Architecture across the organization advising, educating and helping to establish the strategy, direction and key performance goals. The EA is also responsible for advising, educating and helping establish the future technology landscape of Carmax across business units to ensure that Carmax technology solutions continue to deliver an unrivaled experience

The Senior Enterprise Architect is a key member of the Technology team who sits at the intersection of product development and current and future technology vision. The EA has a wealth of knowledge and experience across multiple domains and is responsible for driving the vision and execution of Carmax business capabilities and technology landscape across multiple business and technology teams. They serve a critical role, aligning business vision and technology strategy and championing this strategy across Product leadership team, Lead Developers, Solutions Architects and Technology Infrastructure. Additionally, the EA ensures the appropriate implementation of standards and is responsible for the delivery of key objectives for Architecture across the organization. The EA is also responsible for advising, educating, and helping establish the future technology landscape of Carmax across business units to ensure that Carmax technology solutions continue to deliver an unrivaled experience.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Design an architectural vision for delivery teams aligned to the business strategy and product vision, stakeholder requirements and future capabilities and educate the team on this vision
  • Establish the current and future technology landscape for Carmax considering global principles, business vision, external best practices, competitive landscape, and emerging technologies
  • Developing and communicating the enterprise architecture
  • Aligning architecture initiatives across the enterprise ensuring cohesion of the solutions
  • Coordinating the implementation of architecture designs in partnership with domain and solution architects
  • Steward the cross-enterprise architecture design discussions
  • Coach and lead developers, solution architects and technical leads on best practices, re-usability, development best practices and understanding technical debt as well as the impact of these on availability and stability SLAs
  • Document best practices, enterprise development patterns, technology implementation strategies and drive education and adoption through the organization
  • Partner with leaders across the organization to assist in the development of roadmaps and guardrails including timeline, budget, team structure and skillset requirements
  • Assist in attracting, recruiting, and retaining a strong bench of skilled and engaged associates
  • Responsible for defining and achieving Key Results for the EA organization based on set Objectives
  • Other Duties and Responsibilities as assigned

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

  • Demonstrated problem-solving abilities and creativity
  • Proven analytic orientation as well as ability to be comfortable with some uncertainty
  • Demonstrated focus on delivering creative features that will guarantee market differentiation
  • Innovative; thinks beyond boundaries
  • Persuasive communicator – able to explain complex or intangible concepts
  • Ability to understand business needs and influence business strategies
  • Proficient speaking to large audiences and executives
  • Entrepreneurial drive and spirit; enjoys working in a fast-paced environment
  • Handles constructive criticism with ease; adapts easily and efficiently to change
  • Broad understanding of enterprise technology landscape including security, infrastructure, operations, networking, and application development – must have significant depth in at least one of these areas
  • Experience across multiple business sectors – retail experience preferred
  • Demonstrated knowledge and practice using enterprise architecture frameworks
  • BA/BS Degree required. Master’s Degree a plus
  • 10+ years of experience in Information Technology
  • 2+ years of experience with lean/agile development processes

Work Authorization: Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis. Sponsorship will be considered for this specific role. 

Work Location and Arrangement: This role will be based out of the Richmond, VA Technology Innovation Center or the Dallas Tech Hub in Plano, TX and have a Hybrid work arrangement
