Research Manager (Qualitative Research & Engagement Centre)

Ipsos

Role Overview

Ipsos Public Affairs (PA) houses one of the largest qualitative research businesses in the UK. We design and deliver research for most Government Departments and other public sector bodies. We use a range of methods (in-depth interviews, focus groups, online communities, digital ethnography) and bring innovation to our projects, for example using Augmented Reality, Virtual Reality and AI.

Our domestic and international research is grounded in high-quality, inclusive and ethical processes, while delivering the robust insights needed to make people-centred change. Our rigorous approach means that we are trusted to deliver complex and high-profile studies that help policy makers build public engagement and a true understanding of how policies and public services are working for citizens, businesses and wider society

What will I be doing?

As a Research Manager, you will be part of methods team, managing projects across Public Affairs (PA). These may be research projects or the qualitative research elements of evaluations. They will be with a range of audiences including the public (ranging from global studies to niche groups and with a focus on vulnerable audiences) and senior stakeholders. Our work contributes to the development and evaluation of policies across a range of policy areas and – given the focus on research with vulnerable or marginalised audiences and on sensitive research – you will primarily support projects which feed into government initiatives and policy related to migration and refugees, crime, domestic abuse, homelessness and health inequalities among other areas.

The ideal candidate for this role will be a commercially focussed qualitative researcher, experienced in research with vulnerable audiences and on a range of sensitive research areas. The role will involve:

  • Building and managing effective client relationships through strong communication with client teams and their stakeholders (including policy makers).
  • Contributing to business development, by leading small-medium sized proposals.
  • Being the key point of contact on the project; running internal meetings and providing project updates.
  • Ensuring projects are delivered to budget and timescale through effective project planning (including planning ahead and managing risks), resourcing and managing project teams.
  • Managing relationships with partners, suppliers and internal colleagues as needed to ensure we meet our research objectives. Making suggestions for more efficient approaches or ways of working.
  • Designing discussion guides and stimulus materials, managing the recruitment of research participants and developing sample frames etc. to meet client/study objectives.
  • Moderating in-depth interviews, discussion groups and deliberative workshops, both with stakeholders and the general public, often with clients observing.
  • Overseeing and having responsibility for data management and conducting qualitative data analysis.
  • Developing and compiling reports, both in PowerPoint and Word; delivering accessible and concise findings with clear conclusions and recommendations.
  • Presenting results to clients and stakeholders, both online and in person.
  • Monitoring projects’ financial progress, identifying and mitigating problems by suggesting solutions.
  • Providing training, mentoring and support to others across PA, and playing a leading role in our qualitative research network.
  • Providing support to junior team members, with potential for line management opportunities.
  • Taking a proactive approach to understanding our clients’ business; reading around key topics to contribute to knowledge reviews / add context to proposals or reporting output

What do I need to bring with me?

  • Very good qualitative social research skills. Experience of deliberative and dialogue methods desirable, but not essential. Ability to lead multiple projects and support junior colleagues;
  • A track record in developing successful research proposals, business development activities, including drafting costs.
  • A high level of attention to detail and a solutions-focused approach;
  • Excellent time management skills, including the ability to work across multiple projects, often to tight and demanding deadlines, whilst prioritising tasks effectively and delivering high quality outputs;
  • Experience of people management, including management of small to medium-sized teams to deliver research studies;
  • Ability to lead the development of high-quality research materials, such as discussion guides, stimulus and recruitment materials, in line with client objectives;
  • The ability to manage, analyse and interpret, sometimes large-scale, qualitative datasets, with the ability to interpret complex qualitative data to draw out a clear narrative and insight;
  • Confident and clear written and verbal communication skills, and experience of preparing high-quality written reports and presentations to a publishable standard;
  • Excellent client handling and supplier negotiation skills;
  • Policy knowledge and expertise in relevant areas, or interest in/ability to develop knowledge of new policy areas.
