Summary of Job Duties:

The Center was launched in September 2021 to advance racial equity, access to justice, and fairness in Arkansas through academic legal research. It strives to produce a body of research to further its missions and those of the William H. Bowen School of Law, including increasing access to justice, serving the public, and fostering professionalism in law students. This position is governed by state and federal laws, and agency/institution policy.

The UA Little Rock William H. Bowen School of Law Center for Racial Justice and Criminal Justice Reform (“Center”) is hiring up to ten (10) students. Additional student positions will be available periodically.

Qualifications:

Required Education and/or Experience:

  • Must be a current law student in Arkansas

Positions Available:

Center Fellow (Bowen Students Only):

  • The Center Fellows work on a variety of Center projects, including a grant-funded LSAT pipeline program, community education, programming, fundraising, and research projects related to racial justice and criminal justice reform. Center Fellows must have least two semesters of full- or part-time law school study. Center Fellows must be available to attend some meetings during the day, but have a very flexible schedule. Center Fellows must demonstrate a commitment to racial justice and criminal justice reform, be able to show initiative and work independently, have excellent legal research and writing skills and be able to work 20 hours/week during the semester for two consecutive semesters.

Enhanced Community Policing Project (ECPP) Fellow (Bowen Students Only):

  • The Enhanced Community Policing Project (ECPP) is a two-year research and implementation project that will collect best practices in community policing, use that research to create a comprehensive community policing playbook, and assist Walmart in reimagining its participation in Shop With a Cop program. The ECPP Fellows will conduct research, identify national best practices for community policing, assist in creating a playbook, and assist in implementing a pilot program. The ECPP Student Fellows will work closely with the ECPP Program Director, Connor Thompson, and Professor Boles and Dean cummings, the Co-Principal Investigators. ECPP Fellows must be able to work 10 hours per week for a two-year commitment period.

Court Observation Arkansas (COAR) Observer:

  • The Court Observation Arkansas (COAR) Project is a three-year research project to collect transparent data about the Arkansas criminal justice system by observing proceedings in Arkansas courts. Last spring, COAR was piloted in Pulaski County and is now branching out statewide. COAR Observers are responsible for traveling to district courts throughout Arkansas to observe court hearings and collect and enter data from those proceedings. The COAR Observers will work closely with COAR fellows, the COAR Director, Zoya Miller, and Professor Boles and Dean cummings, the Co-Principal Investigators. COAR Observers must have reliable transportation and be available 1 day per week, from Monday – Thursday, from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., and be able to work from 10-20 hours per week during the semester traveling, conducting court observations, and entering data.
