What you'll do as a Controls Engineer:
An engineering professional will focus on technical packaging line support including analysis and improvement of filling, sterilization, and secondary packaging equipment operations.
- Serves as a subject matter expert (SME) on control’s equipment and controls processes or a line at the plant, through the following support activities:
- Supports the transfer of technology to operations/maintenance, and the testing of processes or equipment changes.
- Technical review of equipment changes, evaluating impact of proposed changes to the process.
- Provides technical evaluation and implementation plan input to the Corrective Action/Preventive Action (CAPA) program.
- Lead and support: cost improvement projects, component or controls system upgrade projects,
- Consulting with divisional SME(s) and PM in the design and implementation phases of capital projects.
- Provides mentoring in technical and organizational areas within work group; monitors the improvement of other engineer(s), e.g. delegates challenging tasks to others to help them develop; provides constructive and timely feedback.
- Participates in the evaluation of assigned staff/project team members and in the identification of development needs.
- Resolves underlying problems. Identifies full range of customer needs and proposes solutions to address them; makes alterations in products or services to better meet (recognized or unrecognized) customer need, e.g. partners with an outside vendor to provide a better deliverable.
Project Management:
- Independently plans and conducts small to medium-size projects within engineering specialty requiring conventional types of plans, investigations, validation documentation and/or equipment changes.
- Establishes workable and trackable schedules. Works with staff, outside firms and/or consultants to agree on plans and timetables for a specific project. Identifies pinch points or conflicts. Sets performance metrics. Assigns responsibilities for team members. Develops a budget.
- Maintains project controls and reporting for cost, scope and schedule. Develops execution strategy, including procurement. Balances multiple demands within assignment, e.g., executes contingency plans to recover from schedule slippage and financial overruns.
Technical/Design
- Independently gather manufacturing performance data and performs analysis, reports findings, prepares and communicates recommendations and action plans, and executes plans to drive operational efficiency.
- Provide technical assistance to operations by demonstrating technical expertise and leadership on high priority issues.
- Possesses knowledge, background and working experience to apply sound engineering principles in support of secondary packaging equipment operation including bottle handling and labeling, case packing, cartoning, bottle and case coding, and vision system.
Organization Interface
- Mentors others by sharing information and providing feedback and guidance.
- Interfaces frequently with inter-organizational and outside customer contacts. Represents the organization in providing solutions to difficult technical issues.
- Prepares written communication. Conveys information effectively through formal and informal documents with team members, designers, technicians, and other technical personnel, both internal and external to Abbott, using appropriate communication protocols; obtains approval to proceed with proposed action plans.
- Establishes networks. Follows through on goals; contributes willingly and incorporates the ideas of others; shares resources, knowledge, and accountability to benefit the objectives of the business.

Education and Experience You'll Bring
Required:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering (Electrical Engineering degree preferred) or closely related discipline is desired, or equivalent technical experience plus demonstrated competence.
- Desired 5+ years of significant engineering and/or operational experience.
- Working knowledge of primary and secondary packaging systems including filling, labeling, sanitizing, case packing, and material handling
- Strong technical knowledge and application of concepts, practices, and procedures. Ability to work on problems of complex scope where analysis of situations or data involves multiple competing factors.
- Works well with other engineers in a collaborative, fast-paced goal-driven environment. Posseses interpersonal skills to negotiate and reconcile differences.
- Listens to and understands others’ points of view and articulates tactfully and respectfully one’s own perspective orally, in writing, and in presentations.
Preferred
- Experience with various Rockwell PLC platforms (PLC-5, ControlLogix, CompactLogix, SLC 500). Emerson DeltaV and Modicon Quantum experience is a plus.
- Experience with various controls hardware: 480VAC variable speed drives, various communications methods, discrete I/O control devices, analog I/O control devices, pneumatics/solenoids, actuators/positioners, instrumentation, industrial bar code readers/vision systems, ink and laser coders, etc
- Technical background in manufacturing facilities, nutritional products, food and beverage manufactures, or similar industries.
- Technical background with high speed packaging equipment: palletizers, case packers, labelers, conveyors, fillers, cappers, and liquid
- Demonstrated competency with fiscal control of budgets or project cost.
