What will you contribute?

The Senior Systems Engineer’s role is to plan, design, implement, and manage the organization’s storage, systems and physical, and virtual infrastructure according to best practices, company policy, and regulatory requirements. The SSE is responsible for adhering to project timelines while maintaining the highest level of accuracy, reliability, and infrastructure availability.

The SSE will develop, implement, and oversee policies and procedures to ensure consistent and repeatable practices for the provisioning of storage and physical/virtual machines running on UNIX based platforms with a high level of focus and responsibility on Solaris based infrastructure. The SSE will be responsible for the management of corporate and production systems and will assist in the day to day operational support. Additionally, the Senior Systems Engineer will function as a senior technical lead resource, reporting to the Manager, Systems Engineering (UNIX/Storage).

Core Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Participates in the translation of architecture documents into design and configuration specifications
  • Leads in the areas of UNIX (specifically Solaris) and storage technologies and products, providing subject matter expertise
  • Install and configure technology components as per the design or vendor specifications
  • Participates in the development of test plans and test cases, and conducts system testing of technology components
  • Participates in project scheduling and planning activities
  • Interacts with project teams in the implementation and configuration of technology solutions
  • Assess impact of scope changes
  • Installation and configuration of enterprise storage and systems as well as UNIX (Solaris) hardware and software
  • Monitor, troubleshoot, administer and tune storage systems, operating systems, and hardware
  • Perform upgrades and testing for systems hardware, software and third party tools
  • Research and recommend the purchase of storage, hardware, and system software
  • Documents build and run books for Steady State Operations
  • Develop and document the configuration and operations of storage and systems
  • Perform capacity planning analysis and other needs assessments
  • Design redundant systems and policies for disaster recovery and archiving to ensure effective protection and integrity of storage appliances and stored data assets
  • Develop strategies and policies to ensure best-practice based regulatory compliance and reduce legal exposure
  • Plan, design and implement messaging security products and related mechanisms
  • Function as part of an On-Call rotation to provide 24 x 7 support

Education, Experience and Competencies:

  • Degree or Diploma in Computer Science or equivalent experience
  • One or more certifications in the corresponding: UNIX, Solaris, Linux, SAN Storage technologies
  • Minimum 5-8 years’ experience deploying, managing, and administering UNIX (Solaris) based operating systems
  • Minimum 4 years’ experience managing enterprise storage solutions
  • Familiarity with Ansible and automation technologies a plus
  • Strong UNIX shell scripting/automation experience (Perl, sed/awk etc.)
  • Strong UNIX system/network performance troubleshooting skills
  • In depth knowledge of network protocols and services (TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, ARP, HTTP, HTTP/S, FTP, NTP) is required
  • Excellent knowledge of storage area networks including: Fibre Channel (Brocade/Cisco FC Switches), iSCSI, SAN based replication, RAID etc.
  • In depth experience with an array of clustering technologies, encryption, virtualization and messaging technologies
  • Knowledge of monitoring technologies and best practices
  • Strong understanding of ITIL and change management policies and procedures
  • Previous experience as a member of a technical support team in a 24 x 7 operating environment
  • Ability to express oneself clearly and logically, both written and verbally
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with a high level of focus on customer service
  • Experience with SQL and Oracle databases is an asset
  • Experience with Azure cloud technologies and IAC is an asset
  • Experience with configuration management tools

Special Working Conditions

  • After hours on-call support (as required)
  • Possibility of occasional travel
  • Must successfully clear Government Reliability Clearance
