Assistant Dean and Chief Human Resources Officer

Position Description

The CHRO also: 

  • Provides strategic human resources consulting services in the areas of complex, organizational design and development, change management, recruitment, compensation. 
  • Partners and works in close collaboration with the head of Equal Opportunity on various shared areas of responsibilities, including training and development strategies, diversity initiatives, and efforts related to improving the work environment; the CHRO is a broker of these services as needed and appropriate. 
  • Directs, manages and develops departmental HR staff. Is responsible for all aspects of managing staff including the performance management process and staff training needs. 
  • Help lead the school’s union relations and negotiations in conjunction with School senior leadership and University Labor Relations, Office of General Counsel, and Central HR teams. 
  • Actively partners with managers, staff and union bargaining unit representatives to address a variety of workplace issues in a strategic way. 
  • Facilitates problem solving and maintains a high level of customer satisfaction across institutional constituencies. 
  • Assists executive management in the annual review, preparation and administration of wage and salary program and all workforce planning efforts to ensure operational efficiencies while retaining key talent. 
  • Develops department goals, objectives and systems. Develops, implements, and evaluates policies and procedures in a highly decentralized university environment. Provides strategic direction to align human resource programs in support of the School's strategic initiatives and mission. 
  • Serves as advisor/consultant to deans, senior administrators and faculty program directors and as liaison to HHR. 
  • Manages specific projects as determined in the annual HR operational plan and participates in functional and cross-functional initiatives. 
  • Ensures compliance with relevant laws and regulations and provides risk management oversight in assigned areas.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree. 
  • A minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible experience in human resources, business, and/or higher education administration. 
  • Demonstrated staff management experience is also required.

Additional Qualifications and Skills

We are looking for people who have: 

  • An advanced degree in business or law is desirable. 
  • Experience working with union labor relations and negotiations a plus. 

Candidate Profile: 

The ideal candidate for the Assistant Dean and Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO) will be called upon to develop a deep working knowledge of the culture, history, and work of the school including the various constituencies served by this role. In addition, the individual must work as a key member of a senior administrative management team with accountabilities to HLS’ Ad Dean, Dean and other members of the School’s top leadership team. 

Accordingly, the individual should be accessible, direct, transparent, and possess a positive, collaborative working style that motivates and inspires colleagues to work hard and well together.

  • Strong crisis management and deft communication skills, to handle a wide range of people and institutional issues with political savvy. 
  • Collegial style/Fun to work with.
