POSITION OVERVIEW AND PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS):

Political Analyst – (AN)

RESPONSIBILITIES

Perform in-depth analyses of complex and significant national, regional, and/or global issues for senior policymakers and key components in U.S. Embassy Baghdad. The Political Analyst will report directly to the Deputy Political Affairs Officer under the overall supervision of the Counselor of Political Affairs.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

The Political Analyst will be responsible for the following duties:

  1. Identify, analyze and monitor key political developments, trends, and emerging issues in Iraq and the wider region; assess implications and make recommendations to senior management on possible measures to address issues of concern and to advance mandated objectives;
  2. Prepare summary and analytical reports including, but not limited to, situation reports, briefing notes, briefing papers, cables, and input to senior readership in Washington, DC;
  3. Support preparations for official meetings, events, and visits, including through drafting talking points and speeches for senior officials;
  4. Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with mission components and counterparts in across the interagency Country Team, Government representatives, political leaders, civil society actors, military and law enforcement actors, academic and research institutions, and other national and international partners on information-sharing, policy and coordination matters, particularly in the development of strategies and plans of action to address political challenges, in pursuit of shared objectives;
  5. Excellent drafting, writing, and analytical skills are critical for the post;
  6. Perform other relevant duties as required.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS (Mandatory Requirements)

  1. Knowledge in area of subject matter expertise.
  2. Ability to effectively plan, research, develop, and write high-quality, complex analyses, studies, projects, assignments, and briefings on key US foreign policy and national security objectives focused on a specific region or transnational issue for interagency consumers and policymakers at the highest levels of government.
  3. Ability to apply expert knowledge of Department of State offices and relevant customer organizations or operations (e.g., military, policymakers, and law enforcement), in order to effectively translate their requirements and provide appropriate output or responses to meet customer needs.
  4. Ability to produce analytic finished information related to the subject matter issue, either as lead analyst or manager of analysts.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Bachelor’s Degree 

Minimum of (3) years of reporting experience with the Department of State, Department of Defense, or equivalent Government agency; preferable in Middle Eastern interests.

LANGUAGE(S):

Level 4/4 in English is required.
