Hours 

Fall 2024, August -December on campus; day and time TBD. Undergraduate courses (100-400 level) are -taught 2x per week for 80 minutes. Graduate courses (500-700 level) are taught once per week for 2 hours and 45 minutes. Instructors are expected to teach primarily on campus.

Job Description 

We are interested in adjuncts/part-time instructors who can provide instruction and expertise in one or more of the following areas: Data science, database management, machine learning and natural language processing, text analytics, big data systems, and/or project management. Please see specific classes below and their class description and note in your cover letter which class you are interested in teaching. Those from marginalized groups, women, and veterans are encouraged to apply.

IST 345 Managing Information Systems Projects

o Project management as a professional discipline in information and communication technology. Introduction to the roles, activities, methods, and tools. Critical review and application of principles.

IST 359 Introduction to Database Management Systems

o This course examines data structures, file organizations, concepts and principles of database management systems (DBMS); as well as data analysis, database design, data modeling, and database implementation. More specifically, IST 359 introduces and focuses on the relational data model; entity-relationship modeling; the Structured Query Language (SQL); data normalization; and database design. Using Microsoft’s SQL server DBMS as an implementation vehicle, this course provides hands-on experience in database design and implementation through assignments, lab exercises and class exercises.

IST 363 Advanced Front End Web Design

o Students are introduced to emerging web technologies to create robust, high quality front end web interfaces. Students learn advanced page layout/styling techniques as well as responsive design.

IST 615 Cloud Management

o This lab-focused course will broaden and deepen student’s understanding of cloud management. This course will equip students with skills in cloud enterprise service creation and management, and technical and business knowledge required for assessing opportunities and risks of cloud services. The course focuses on developing skills to manage cloud instances through lab assignments in the simulated environment provided by top Cloud vendors in the market today. We note the course uses –cloud services –but some activities must be done in the students own accounts and machines. Conceptual themes will also be presented alongside technical aspects of cloud management.

IST 644 Managing Data Science Projects

o Increase the agility of a data science project by improving the process a team uses to execute their project. Explore data science life cycles (e.g., CRISP-DM, TDSP) and collaboration frameworks (e.g., Kanban, Scrum).

IST 659 Data Administration Concepts and Database Management

o Definition, development, and management of databases for information systems. Data analysis techniques, data modeling, and schema design. Query languages and search specifications. Overview of file organization for databases. Data administration concepts and skills.

IST 664 Natural Language Processing

o Linguistic and computational aspect of natural language processing technologies. Lectures, readings, and projects in the computational techniques required to perform all levels of linguistic processing of text. Additional work required of graduate students.

IST 686 Quantitative Reasoning for Data Science

o Multiple strategies for inferential reasoning about quantitative data. Methods for connecting data provenance to substantive analytical conclusions

IST 722 Data Warehouse

o Introduction to concepts of business intelligence (BI) and the practice/techniques in building a BI solution. Focuses are on how to use data warehouses as a BI solution to make better organizational decisions.

IST 736 Text Mining

o Introduces concepts and methods for knowledge discovery from large amount of text data, and the application of text mining techniques for business intelligence, digital humanities, and social behavior analysis.

Qualifications 

  • Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s degree preferred in Information Management, Computer Science, Data Science, Project Management, or related field. 
  • Those with an unrelated degree but with relevant experience or background in the field will be considered. 
  • Applicants should also have knowledge and 3 years or more of real- world work experience with machine learning, natural language processing, text analytics, big data, SCRUM, agile project management, and/or database administration and management.

Responsibilities 

Successful candidates will be prepared to serve as instructor and mentor and be willing to work with the Professor of Record, Program Director, and other instructors teaching this class. Our courses have a developed syllabus, exercises, and texts, however, we seek individuals who can bring their own experiences to the course.

  • Collaborate with professor of record and/or program director, who is responsible for creating the course syllabus and course content, as well as providing an overview of their overall vision for the course.
  • Attend onboarding and training with the iSchool’s Faculty Center for Teaching and Learning (FCTL)
  • Maintain office hours and open communication with students.
  • Maintain the course in the Blackboard Learning Management system
  • Grade student assignments and exams in a timely manner; provide feedback when appropriate.
  • Prepare for weekly in-person sessions with students
  • Prepare to offer the class in the Fal 2024 semester on campus
