Position Description

The Career Engagement Office is dedicated to Seattle University's mission of educating the whole person, to professional formation, and to empowering leaders for a just and humane world.

Reporting to the Director of Career Engagement, the Assistant Director of External Relations is responsible for the full lifecycle of employer engagement, developing and maintaining relationships with employers to expand career and external experiential learning opportunities for students for the purpose of successful engagement and recruiting outcomes. 

The Assistant Director actively explores, develops and executes innovative recruitment programs to enhance industry engagement and will provide Seattle University students with insights, experiences, and connection opportunities needed on their path towards meaningful post-graduation outcomes.

This position is tasked with outreach to employers and industry through networking, referrals, and prospecting.

Employer & Industry Outreach (35%)

Support the Director of Career Engagement with development of strategy, policies, programs, and guidelines related to early career recruitment, experiential learning, and employer relationship management.

  • Nurtures relationships with external organizations related to career and experiential learning opportunities. 
  • Develop and maintain robust and effective working relationships with employer organizations, recruiters, industry associations, community organizations, and visitors to support the University and the Career Engagement Office’s mission and strategy
  • Recruit a socially conscious portfolio of employers who are committed to a better, more equitable future of work through accessible and transparent recruitment, hiring, and promotion of early career candidates
  • Create mechanisms to connect students of marginalized identities (for example: students of color, first generation students, students with disabilities, LGBTQ+ students, and veteran students) with alumni and employers
  • Consult with employers on effective recruiting strategies, partnership opportunities, and employer branding and visibility strategies
  • In collaboration with the Career Engagement team, provides consultation to employers regarding effective campus recruiting, branding, and visibility strategies.
  • Collaborate with on-campus partners to increase outreach, integration and implementation of equity-oriented engagement between employers/industry and students, student clubs and organizations
  • Develop relationships with student organizations to engage and educate students in the process of building community and expanding their networks with alumni and industry professionals
  • Participate regularly in local community business events such as chambers of commerce, economic and workforce development organizations, etc.
  • Monitor workplace, industry, and student interests and engagement trends to guide strategic planning and programmatic initiatives with a social justice lens
  • Represent office in a variety of stakeholder events for employer development and cultivation purposes

Recruiting and Event Management (30%)

Develop, implement, and execute processes for effective project management for recruitment and major Career Engagement Office events. 

  • Actively, build, advocate, facilitate and/or enhance recruitment processes that are fair, equitable, and anti-racist, resulting in impactful opportunities and outcomes for both students and employer partners
  • Lead, plan and coordinate several recruiting events, including but not limited to career fairs, industry meetups, career treks, individual employer events (coffee chats, challenges, hackathons, tech talks, lunch and learns, interview scheduling, etc.)
  • Manage the career fair management system (currently using Handshake) that supports all event management functions, including event registrations, confirmations, fee collections, employer and student marketing, and reporting. Develop new ways to use the system to streamline processes. Identify and troubleshoot technical issues.
  • Work closely with Career Engagement staff to support sourcing efforts to secure employer participation in wide variety of career education opportunities including, but not limited to, resume reviews, mock interviews, career fair preparation, networking, industry takeovers, career treks, and other educational content offerings
  • Co-lead the planning and execution of the Career Engagement Office annual signature employer event - an event to educate employers on current student career issues and discuss important trends and strategies vital to the continued success of the Career Engagement Office.
  • Enforce university and Career Engagement Office recruitment policies and guidelines for employer participation in student recruiting programs regarding outreach/marketing methods, diversity recruiting efforts, and adherence to office procedures and ethical conduct
  • Work closely with the Albers Career Center in career event planning and employer partnerships

Technology, Data Analysis, and Reporting (20%)

  • Develops expertise in career management platform (Handshake) and makes recommendations for optimal use of the platform to employers, students, campus stakeholders, and Career Engagement Office staff.
  • Develop a deep understanding of all features and functionality of the system, and provide regular assessments and updates to employers and the Career Engagement team to improve recruiting processes
  • Facilitate use of the system for campus partners, supporting activities such as virtual career fairs, on-campus student employment, and other employer-related activities
  • Maintain working knowledge of the office’s career technologies and serve as the lead coordinator of assigned technologies
  • Assist in data collection, maintenance, tracking, evaluation and reporting related to recruitment programs, employer involvement, and student interactions with career technologies
  • Collect and maintain up-to-date external relations data and reports
  • Work in collaboration with Assistant Director of Career Engagement and Information Technology Systems to ensure regular system maintenance and data-driven enhancements

Communications (10%)

  • Develop opportunities for employers to contribute content to Career Engagement’s marketing and storytelling channels to enhance career education (industry insights, blog posts, e-newsletter content, social media, etc.)
  • Assist in the implementation of internal and external communications strategies and projects
  • Effectively co-manage an active inbox (phone and email) of inquiries from internal and external stakeholders
  • Conduct group workshops and presentations on behalf of the Career Engagement team
  • Collaborate with team members to plan and execute campus-wide marketing of Career Engagement events, programs, services, and stories as appropriate
  • Contribute to periodic employer and student newsletters
  • Support ad hoc presentation requests by campus partners such as Admissions, Alumni Engagement, Campus Ministry, Orientation Programs, student organizations, etc.

Other duties as assigned (5%)

  • Support departmental initiatives, as prioritized by overall Career Engagement Office goals
  • Contribute to the strategic planning process for the department and ongoing evaluation for continuous improvement
  • Actively participate in and/or assist in the coordination or facilitation of staff meetings and training sessions
  • Support the department/university by serving on committees or task forces as appropriate
  • Participate in professional development opportunities as a group and self-identified opportunities as part of a professional development plan throughout the year
  • Represent Seattle University’s Career Engagement Office through involvement in regional and national associations

  • Holds a bachelor's degree or demonstrated knowledge and experience commensurate with respect to university recruitment, human resources, student success, and/or external relations
  • Possesses strong communication and interpersonal skills that enable development of positive relationships with key external and campus partners to provide personalized attention to students and other stakeholders
  • Has excellent organizational abilities with an acute attention to detail, responsive and anticipatory in meeting with the needs of various stakeholders
  • Has exceptional time-management skills
  • Is curious, creative, and an innovative problem-solver

Highly Desired

  • Master-level degree 
  • Knowledge and experience in university recruiting, human resources, community relations, workforce business development, employment trends
  • Familiarity with best practices, current trends/issues in career development and higher education.
  • Familiarity with professional ethics and standards as noted by the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE).

Compensation at a Glance:

Salary Range: $55,000 - $60,000

Seattle University has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information, and not based on a candidate’s gender or any other protected status.
