THE ROLE

Working as part of the Furniture, Silver and Decorative Arts Department as a Cataloguer, you will work closely with the Head of Sale and other Specialists in cataloguing and coordinating the sales.

RESPONSIBLITIES 

  • Catalogues and research items for sale (Paris, online and export) at various Sotheby's locations and external warehouses (Paris, Gennevilliers, etc.). Participe au suivi des œuvres (enlèvement et demandes de restauration, suivi de la garantie, nettoyage lots d’orfèvrerie)
  • Actively participates in the production of digital and paper catalogues.
  • Ensures that photos are complete and takes part in the layout.
  • Participates in the drafting of notices and then has them approved.
  • Draw up condition reports under the supervision of the head of sales
  • Participate in the production of inventories and sales proposals for the department.
  • Training with the department's experts in the process of authenticating and appraising objects.
  • Participates in the organization of events likely to develop the department's activity.
  • Monitor storage of the past lots (sold or BI) in liaison with department administrators.
  • Ensuring effective coordination with the other departments of Sotheby's Paris and the International Department. 
  • Handle requests for reproductions and catalogue rights. 
  • Ensures that the departments' documentation is kept up to date and enhanced.
  • Takes part in expert appraisal sessions with external consultants and prepares reports on the work carried out with a view to monitoring appraisals.
  • Adheres to house rules and compliance rules in all dealings with clients.
  • Researching and cataloguing objects to the highest standard, including physical inspection and documentation of works as well as provenance and academic research for each work
  • Preparation of footnotes/essays and talking points for each work
  • Assisting with research and object vetting, both internally and with external experts
  • Assisting in facilitating conservation projects
  • Preparing condition reports

IDEAL EXPERIENCE & COMPETENCIES

  • 2 years of experience in the art world is preferred (also auction house experience preferred)
  • Good, general knowledge of Furniture, Silver and Decorative Arts
  • Self-starter
  • A team player with excellent communication skills
  • Thorough and focused, with a passion and commitment to learning about and working in the field
  • Professional and discreet client service skills
  • Excellent writing, proof-reading and organizational skills
  • Ability to maintain composure in a stressful environment and meet frequent deadlines
  • Ability to prioritize and multitask
