Private Music Instructor

Reports To: Mills College at Northeastern University Arts and Writing Unit Chair

Summary of Position

As a Private Music Instructor at Mills College at Northeastern University, you will work with one or multiple students individually in teaching them repertoire or techniques on a particular instrument, in voice, or in composition. Instructors in music are active members in the music community in the Bay Area, nationally, or even worldwide. It is the responsibility of the instructor to pass on their expertise and help students at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and at the beginner and expert levels achieve their musical goals for the semester.

Responsibilities

  • Have an exhaustive knowledge of traditional and contemporary performance techniques and compositional styles.
  • Have excellent communication skills and pedagogical technique.
  • Meet one hour a week for 5 to 14 weeks with each student for their lessons.
  • Speak with students about their musical goals for the semester and help them achieve them.
  • Coordinate with the Unit Administrator to schedule performances.
  • Find scores and other classroom materials for student’s study in the Library or other musical resources.

Additional Duties and Responsibilities

  • Music Instruction is not covered by students’ tuition. Therefore, instructors must provide an hourly rate (typically between $90 to $125) which students must pay for each semester. Students have the opportunity to audition for a lesson scholarship to cover some or all of the cost of instruction fees.
  • You must be available to serve as a member on the audition committee for lesson scholarships held during the first week of the semester (usually end of August/beginning of September or end of January/beginning of February).

Preferred Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in Music Performance, Composition, Technology or equivalent professional experience in Music.

Broad knowledge of different musical styles including but not limited to classical western music, experimental music, jazz, pop, improvisation.

If the applicant has expertise in a specific family of music (e.g., stringed instruments, keyboard, woodwinds), they will be able to teach multiple instruments. For example, if you know clarinet, it would be helpful to also have expertise in bass clarinet, or saxophone to be able to meet the interests of many students.
