Your Role:

The health reporter for MPR News covers a wide-ranging beat that includes policy, science and wellness. You will produce daily news from your beat for audio and digital platforms, as well as deeply researched enterprise stories. You also will help us develop sources that reflect the diversity of the Twin Cities and Minnesota. You will receive extensive onboarding and on-going training

Expected Compensation Range: $33.10 - $39.72/hour. Exact hourly rate is determined by experience and education related to the role, organizational compensation structure and internal equity.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Develop deep sources in the health field and the affected communities
  • Research, report and write news stories as assigned.
  • Conduct interviews using radio recording equipment, by phone or Zoom.
  • Edit audio, record narration, mix stories ranging from 1 to 4 minutes in length.
  • Provide live reports with hosts of magazines and talk shows
  • Take photographs when needed
  • Collaborate with digital team on social media posts, such as Instagram and TikTok
  • May perform public outreach and presents at conferences and other events to highlight area of expertise

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience
  • 5+ years daily journalism experience

Required Skills:

  • Proven ability to build a beat with diverse sources
  • Interviewing and recording audio for radio or podcasts
  • Audio editing, mixing in Adobe Audition, Hindenburg or similar products
  • Good news judgment and a keen knowledge of current events, particularly in the policy or scientific fields
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments
  • Meet deadlines, including daily
  • Demonstrated ability to write clear, concise and conversational copy
  • Effective collaboration with editors, producers and other reporters

Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • Health reporting
  • Major market on-air radio experience in a news setting
  • Familiarity with public radio programs and the public radio audience
  • Reporting using data, FOIA, or related requests
