Gastrointestinal Academic & Clinical Leader and Great Charlotte Region Leader for the Center for Digestive Health

Position Summary:

Atrium Health and the Wake Forest University School of Medicine are seeking a dynamic leader with strong credentials in clinical gastroenterology and clinical, translational, or health services research for the position of Atrium Health Gastroenterology Academic and Clinical Leader and Gastrointestinal Leader for the newly established interdisciplinary Center for Digestive Health. Requirements for the position include national academic stature, accomplished clinical skills, and demonstrable leadership skills to expand Gastroenterology research, educational, and clinical programs across Atrium Health. Candidates should meet criteria for appointment at the Associate Professor or Professor (preferred) level in the Wake Forest University School of Medicine.

This position is based at Atrium Health in Charlotte and reports to Dr. Scott Lindblom, Senior Medical Director of the Adult Medical Specialties Care Division, and Dr. Scott Furney, Chair of the Department of Internal Medicine (Atrium Health Charlotte Market). The position will also have a “dotted line” reporting relationship to Dr. Gary Rosenthal, Chair of the Department of Internal Medicine in the Wake Forest University School of Medicine (Winston-Salem Market). 

This new position would be responsible for building the clinical and academic programs in gastrointestinal diseases across the Greater Charlotte and to developing strategies for building such programs in other regions. In building research programs, the incumbent will have the opportunity to utilize the full Advocate Health clinical footprint, which includes 60 inpatient and 1100 outpatient facilities in North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Illinois, and Wisconsin and to capitalize on Advocate Health’s commitment to establishing a preeminent Academic Learning Health System. Advocate Health provides care to more than 6,000,000 patients annually and is currently the nation’s third largest not-for-profit health system. Advocate Health is based in Charlotte and represents the integration in December 2022 of the legacy Atrium Health and Advocate Aurora health systems. 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Implement a long-term vision for Gastroenterology that is built around excellence in our three core academic missions of teaching, patient care, and research and around our mission to improve health equity for the populations we serve. 
  • Further enhance extramural research programs by aligning with institutional strengths and with the focus of the Wake Forest University School of Medicine research centers. 
  • Recruit and retain exceptional research and clinical faculty. 
  • Support the career development of research and clinical faculty and serve as a nurturing mentor. 
  • Develop an organizational and leadership structure for managing Gastroenterology academic and clinical programs. 
  • Work with the Senior Medical Director of the Adult Medical Specialties Care Division, Chair of the Department of Internal Medicine, and Chief of the Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Section on Gastroenterology and Hepatology to develop and implement strategies for growing clinical services across the Greater Charlotte and Winston-Salem markets, establishing regional referral programs for specific high impact clinical conditions, and enhancing contributions margins of clinical programs. 
  • Partner with the Chair of Surgery in the Greater Charlotte Region to grow the Center for Digestive Health. \
  • Promote diversity and inclusion in all of its dimensions and nurture a supportive and respectful environment that enables faculty and non-faculty physicians and staff to accomplish their professional goals.

  • Established track record of scholarship and success in obtaining extramural funding as principle investigator for clinical and/or healthcare delivery research studies in an area of Gastroenterology that connects with the Academic Learning Health System. 
  • Established track record in leading clinical programs. 
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to work effectively in a matrixed organization with research center directors and clinical and health system leadership to further advance the Center’s academic programs. 
  • As a faculty member, extensive experience teaching as a professor of Gastroenterology at a top-tier Academic Medical Center.
  • Demonstrated creativity in developing a compelling vision for digestive diseases research that are fully aligned with institutional strengths and School of Medicine research centers. 
  • Demonstrated ability to lead a diverse group and work with health system partners using a collaborative approach and to nurture, mentor, and support the career development of junior faculty and trainees. 
  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills. 
  • Strong communication and presentation skills for both clinical and non-clinical audiences and the ability to obtain philanthropic support.
  • Demonstrated commitment to promote diversity, inclusion, and health equity and to advocate for these core organizational values.
