Vice President for University Communications and Marketing

Carnegie Mellon University seeks an accomplished, collaborative, and visionary leader to serve as Vice President for University Communications and Marketing. The vice president reports to President Farnam Jahanian and is a member of the president’s senior leadership team. The vice president will oversee the Division of University Communications and Marketing comprised of more than 40 talented and committed staff responsible for telling the university’s stories with a rich and authentic voice and representing the CMU Brand. The vice president will develop and implement a compelling, comprehensive communications and marketing strategy and program capable of meeting the institution’s objectives. The vice president will promote the university’s mission and preserve its standing as an international leader in higher education and research. In addition, the vice president will create a unified vision for communications and marketing that delivers powerful and cohesive messaging and storytelling, enhances the brand, and furthers the goals of the entire university, including its individual colleges and administrative units as well as campuses and locations worldwide. The vice president will represent the university’s commitment to the transformative power of education, promote equity and inclusion, and support an environment of belonging.

The vice president will be a relationship-oriented leader with strong interpersonal skills and self-awareness. They will be an excellent oral and written communicator with the ability to articulate matters of complexity and nuance to multiple and varied groups of stakeholders.

You should demonstrate:

  • A proven record of success in an administrative position with responsibility for guiding strategy, developing employees, and fiscal planning.
  • Proven record of fostering diversity, belonging and teamwork to create collaborative working relationships across culturally diverse groups.
  • A relationship-oriented leader with strong interpersonal skills and self-awareness.
  • Excellent oral and written communication with a demonstrated ability to articulate matters of
  • complexity and nuance to multiple and varied groups of stakeholders.
  • Proven success developing and strategies to enhance institutional reputation and/or grow the audience for a large complex organization.
  • Excellent organizational, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Knowledge of best practices, emerging issues, trends, and opportunities in university higher education communications; and Ability to implement and analyze data strategically to optimize the impact of marketing and communication tools and technology.

Qualifications:

  • Education: A bachelor’s degree is required.
  • Master’s or professional degree in marketing, communications, higher education, public relations or related discipline preferred.
  • Experience: A minimum of ten (10) years of relevant experience.
  • Experience in crisis and reputation management, understanding and respect for shared governance in higher education; a deep understanding of and passion for the role of higher education preferred.
