Department 00078 - School of Music Job Summary

The College of Fine Arts and the School of Music seek a post-doctoral fellow with a focus on interdisciplinary approaches to scholarship and research-based practice involving engagement with non- Western and/or underrepresented music traditions. The scholarly focus of the successful candidate should complement the expertise of our current faculty. The successful candidate will be able to work across subdisciplines within the School of Music and with colleagues elsewhere in the University to strengthen research in areas connected to ethnomusicology.

The Raymond C. Morales Fellowship (named in honor of Professor of Graphic Design, Raymond C. Morales—the first tenured faculty member appointed in the CFA from an underrepresented group) is designed to promote diversity within the College faculties by encouraging graduates from underrepresented groups who have completed a terminal degree to pursue careers in university teaching. The CFA Fellowship is a three-year residency.

Stipends/Benefits: A competitive annual stipend; a full Benefits package; support including office space and computer; library privileges; ongoing funding opportunities for research-related expenses.

Responsibilities

(1) Conduct research in ethnomusicology; (2) teach 1-2 undergraduate and graduate courses per semester, which may include our Special Topics undergraduate courses, graduate seminars in musicology, and/or our general education “World Music” course; (3) although there are no specific service expectations associated with this position, the ideal candidate will be able to energetically partner with current faculty and multiple university departments and organizations, engage in outreach to the larger community, and broaden the curricular opportunities of the School of Music. The Fellow will be supported by mentors who will help integrate them into the School, College, and University and connect them to professional development opportunities related to teaching and scholarship.

Minimum Qualifications Preferences

The following will be considered as positive factors in choosing successful candidates: • Earned Ph.D. or ABD status, with dissertation to be signed by June 30, 2024;

  • The preferred areas of specialization for this position include Indigenous, Latin American, or Pacific Islander musics. A background in performance of these musics would also be welcome.
  • Potential for superior scholarly achievement in the field of Ethnomusicology;
  • College/university teaching experience desirable;
  • Promise of continuing achievement as a teacher;
  • Likelihood of using the diversity of human experience as an educational resource in creating curriculum, teaching, and scholarship;
  • Commitment to working with faculty to create a curriculum and an artistic space that centralize diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging;
  • Sustained engagement with communities that are underrepresented in the academy and an ability to bring this asset to learning, teaching, and scholarship at the college and university level;
  • Membership in one or more groups whose underrepresentation in the US professoriate has been severe and longstanding;

Reviewers may also look at factors such as the likelihood that the applicant will fully utilize support for the duration of the three-year term of the award and pursue an active research agenda during that time.
