Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:

The Department of Animal Science in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa seeks applicants for a full-time Assistant Professor of Practice, Director of Animal Science Farms. This position will provide overall instructional and operational management of the dairy, beef, swine, horse, sheep, turkey and poultry farms, and related facilities and activities, and supervision of their respective farm managers. The position will be based in Ames and all farms are located near the ISU campus. The Director will be expected to develop and implement strategies that will maximize the effectiveness of the animal science farms in achieving the teaching, research, and Extension missions of the department and college. As such, the incumbent will work collaboratively with departmental and college leadership to pursue excellence in the teaching mission especially, related to undergraduate and graduate students, and may assist with and/or be the instructor and advisor of record given departmental needs and priorities.

The Director will be responsible for providing training to farm managers utilizing state of the art farm operations strategies to optimize the financial and structural operations and risk mitigation of each farm. They will be responsible for ensuring compliance with all campus, state and federal regulations regarding animal care and use, and safety for farm users. They will oversee the maintenance of facilities, equipment and land, and develop long-term plans for future needs of the farms. The Director will work with the farm managers to effectively manage animal and feed purchases and sales to optimize financial operations of each farm. The animal science farms maintain a close collaboration with the CALS and ISU Research Farms and the Director will work closely with them to ensure optimization of all farms operations. Additionally, there will be frequent engagement with the recently opened ISU and Kent Corporation Feed Mill and Grain Science complex.

The Director will be expected to provide leadership and innovative approaches to enhance the student learning experience throughout the farm system. Each year more than 100 undergraduate students are employed on the farms providing a unique opportunity for student learning and education. The Director will be expected to develop and implement onboarding training and continuing educational programs for student employees. The Director will also work collaboratively with the faculty in the Animal Sciences department to support curriculum innovations and approaches for courses that utilize the farms to enhance student learning and development.

The Animal Science farms are integral to a wide range of research projects led by ISU faculty. The Director will be expected to support and enhance the research mission by working closely with faculty and graduate students on these projects. This will involve optimizing animal inventories, securing feeds and supplies, coordinating equipment and facility use, and engaging farm managers and student workers in the projects.

This is a term faculty position with the rights and responsibilities as defined in the ISU Faculty Handbook, including advancement of rank. The Director will report to the Chair of the Department of Animal Science. It is a 12-month appointment with a three-year term, subject to renewal. The Director may be required to occasionally work after hours and on weekends.

Required Minimum Qualifications:

1. A Bachelor of Science degree in agriculture with 5 years of experience in farm systems management.

Preferred Qualifications:

1. MS, PhD, MBA or DVM.

2. Supervisory experience with ability to lead diverse and effective teams.

3. Evidence of effectiveness in management of large budgets in the context of animal agriculture.

4. Experience working in a team-based, collaborative environment.
