2024 Summer Internship - Communications Intern, Fellowship Programs (Paid)

The National Fellows Program and #ShareTheMicInCyber Fellowship at New America seek an enthusiastic, motivated individual for a full-time hybrid or remote communications-focused internship beginning in early June 2024.

The Communications Intern will support the two fellowship programs in planning and executing their communications work. This position would be ideal for someone looking to gain communications and program management skills within a nonprofit policy setting.

The #ShareTheMicInCyber Fellowship (#STMIC Fellowship) is a program providing cybersecurity professionals from diverse backgrounds with an opportunity to conduct policy research and analysis, access professional development, examine critical cyber security issues, and explore questions of diversity and the human side of cybersecurity. We believe that diversity in cybersecurity is vital to national security, and are focused on investing in promising leaders reflective of our nation and global community. The National Fellows Program invests in thinkers—journalists, scholars, filmmakers, and public policy analysts—who generate big, bold ideas that have an impact and spark new conversations about the most pressing issues of our day. Responsibilities:

  • Support day-to-day communications:
  • Prepare the first draft of monthly newsletters that compile all Fellows-related program activities and published work for any given month.

  • Prepare and post updates, news, and fellows’ news on the program’s social media platforms.
  • Manage, update, and administer program pages on the New America website; editing, proofreading, and posting content.
  • Liaise with New America communications teams.
  • Support communications and outreach efforts for program announcements.:
  • For the National Fellows: prepare biographies, website and social media content, and other materials in preparation for the Class of 2025 announcement. 
  • For the #STMIC Fellows: prepare website and social media content in preparation for the application opening announcement for the next #STMIC Fellows cohort.
  • Support the Fellows and staff to plan and then execute both internal and external events
  • Draft event invitations and event posting language
  • Create relevant social collateral, and posting event listings

Program-Specific Projects

  • #STMIC Fellowship projects:
  • Under the guidance of the Program Manager, strategize and document outreach processes for publications and other news from the #STMIC Fellowship program.
  • Research and curate outreach lists of reporters, experts, and other outlets focused on cybersecurity and/or technology.
  • As needed, support the production of staff and Fellows’ written work, such as researching and editing.
  • National Fellows:
  • Prepare interview briefing memos for the incoming Class.
  • Create social media collateral, including social media cards and images related to the newsletter and Class announcement.
  • Update the Fellows project database and Fellows Archive that tracks completed projects and notable awards.

Skills/Qualifications:

  • Excellent writing, proofreading, and copy-editing skills.
  • High attention to detail for both internal and external communications.
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to prioritize work and manage their time in order to meet multiple deadlines.
  • Experience preparing content for e-newsletters. This can be through volunteering experiences or school assignments.

Desired Skills:

  • Familiarity and some experience with social media and traditional media relations.
  • Experience or interest in data management.
  • Experience supporting events.
  • Basic graphic design skills.
